At 5 years all laptops show their age. The (i5, i7chips) just run too hot and there really isn't adequate airflow.sae said:

I have several of both Windows (some old, some new) and Macs (mainly newer) computers.
I am very fortunate to live 5 miles from an Apple Retail store here in Indy which has been there for sometime. It didn't take long to realize that the level of service provided there was a distinct advantage in resolving many issues. The place has alway been busy, but in the last few years is swamped 7 days a week doing support work primarily on iPhones. If the software I need is only available on the Mac, that's what I use (e.g. Final Cut Pro X for video editing and Motion for assorted animation).
About 18 months ago, Microsoft put in a Windows/Xbox store within a stones throw of the Apple store. Their technical support is unbelievable. These folks have trade school degrees and they are taught how to communicate. I have had at least 6 incidents with different machines that they resolved at no cost. My son had a minor charge on one incident and none on another.
They do sell assorted computers in the store from some, but not all, manufactures. Since they are servicing them, trust me they have got them tested. I have come to realize that some of the computer companies that Microsoft sells their software to are doing a great disservice to Microsoft and Windows. From now on, I am going to buy everything through these stores, or build the computers (desktops) myself.
I recently took a year-old laptop to the store (originally purchased on line from the manufacturer -- one of the biggest). I could not get Windows 8.1 upgrade to install. I left it at the store and told them to keep the thing as long as needed. They had assorted technicians work on it. They kept me posted every day for over a week. Every time they tried to install, they were told it was already installed. Finally it was discovered that attempts had been partially successful. Near the end, there were prompts for user input that were BLACK TYPE ON A BACKGROUND. Nice screen driver code HP. Impossible to read.
Bottom line --- service is VERY important if you value your time. Both Apple and Windows are proving this. There are about 50 Microsoft stores scattered around the US. If you have to drive several hours to get to one, it can be worthwhile.

Well, now that the news is out about iPhone 6 and 6+ as well as the Apple Watch who's going to be the first to get some? [tongue]
At least here you will be paying dearly for the phones - iPhone 6 / 64GB 800€, 6+ / 64GB 900€, 128GB version 1000€ [scared]
I guess I'll try to cling onto my 5S for some time still... These phone prices are getting absurd...

Can't help it but to really rethink if its Worth It(tm) anymore as you can pick up the Google Nexus 5 32GB for 350€ without a contract... makes a helluva contrast to the iP6 prices.
Already succumbed to a Nexus 7 (2013) tablet instead of a retina iPad Mini (mainly due to better form factor for reading books on the plane, but price was in its favor as well) and I'm finding the Android experience about as good as the iOS one.
Slightly more irritating touch screen, but Androids make up for the jitteryness with SwiftKey typing (wish Google would refine its push vs. swipe detection to average out smaller sideways movements as pushes rather than thinking they are slides).

The watch is a joke - thousands of flashy combo's, integration for all of your sports and health use, etc - but the stupid thing is only "water resistant" .. not "water proof".

I don't think most of the people waiting for the AppleWatch were planning on Scuba Diving with it. Water resistant means you can shower with it, but probably not a good idea to take a fully electronic computer into the pool to swim.
As for apps... People said the same thing when the iPhone and iPad first came out. Now....let's see....there are currently about 1.3 MILLION apps available for the IOS devices. An App for just about any task you can imagine. I'm sure the developers are already thinking about apps for the watch that we can't even imagine right now.
I'm a died-in-the-wool Appleholic, and I'm excited to get the watch. I can already see how I can make a lot of use out of it in both my personal, as well as my professional life....and at $349 entry level, it's a drop in the bucket. [smile]
Tim Cook isn't Steve Jobs, but I'm not sure what you think he could be doing better.... and as the head of the world's most valuable company, I'm not sure anyone could make a case to replace him.

I don't want to scuba dive with it ... there'd be no point. I have excellent Suunto kit for that purpose, but ocean sports are aerobic events that you train for and ideally monitor yourself for performance improvement.

Now I like Apple kit, but it's a relative thing. As a package it's a better experience than the next option (to me) - but it doesn't compare to the Festool experience relative to most other tool options.
The cost of engineering the Apple watch to be waterproof to 10m wouldn't have cost a lot per unit, but I'm sure it would have "sunk" millions in profits for their target sales.
The sad fact is less than 1% would event have the desire to get their hands wet with their Apple watch on and that's the market model Apple target. I'm in the less than 1% camp with this and that's what's ticking me off!
I don't car what other people think of it and if they flock to the Apple store for this next piece of Apple bling I won't judge them ... they'll probably get real personal value from it. BUT!! for me I'm calling it a catch up product with a serious short coming and a real sign that Apple are now ... dare I say it? MARKETING DRIVEN, instead of innovation driven.
Oh well, never mind. Tech has a 2 year duty cycle these days, either a competitor will force Apple to make it waterproof or Apple will use the angle to get everyone to upgrade to the improved 2016 Apple smart watch [wink] [big grin]

I'll be the first to admit that I have NO IDEA what makes something water-resistant versus water-proof. I assume the point of making it water resistant was to prevent it from becoming a high-tech paperweight because of a water-related accident, but I do have a question:
Wouldn't the touch technology be useless when underwater anyway? If so, it would make ZERO sense to send time and money to make it water-proof if there was no value.
And yes, maybe future versions will solve all of these issues...and bolster Apple's revenue stream!

There's a lot of distinction between resistant and proof.
You don't want to use a touch screen under water, that's not the real point. The use would be to continue to record body telemetry while in the water. My Garmin can record heart, GPS location, etc in the water (surface swimming).
Look, I'll be angry about it and probably buy one anyway - that's just me. Wuffles is spot on, take it off before you attempt the washing up!!!
Not interested in the watch, i think its ugly. The decision for me is which phone ? The 6+ is supposed to have better battery life & better focus on the camera etc but I'm not sure i want a phone that big. I need to find some sizes & make a plywood template to get an idea of size before pre-ordering [crying]

The 6+ is going to be almost equivalent to the Galaxy Note 3 in size. I've been using the note 3 and love the size. I'll definitely be going for the big boy. It will almost eliminate the need for other devices for me and my needs.woodguy7 said:
