Does it depend on the size of the pictures ?  I have real trouble attaching pictures to posts  [crying]

I'm not Alex, but yes, I think if you keep them below 600x600 pixels, they will attach fine.

Huh? Does the size matter? I normally attach 800X600 size pictures... Sorry to everyone, I don't know photo etiquette.

What is the optimal size picture for a post?

I don't know the actual limitation Chris, 800x600 obviously works if that's what you use.

Does size matter, you ask...    [bite tongue]

You might check out the discussion on Image Attachment Changes  --  especially Rick's reply (reply #3).

I just tried to attach a large picture of 2593 x 1944 pixels and 919 KB, but it didn't work.  I myself use pictures of 800 x 600 when I post them here, and with a file size around 125 - 150 kb and that works great.

When talking about an ideal size for pictures, you got think of two things: first what the maximum size is the forum software will handle properly, and second, how it will look on people's monitors. Regarding the software, it's obvious it can't handle the size of the picture I just tried, but as I've seen a really big picture of a Kapex here, posted by Rick Christopherson some time ago, I think you should be able to use pictures of at least 1280 width and maybe bigger, but not much bigger.

But it's another story how it's gonna look on other people's computers, because people use lots of different types of monitors with different size. Many people have widescreen monitors these days (16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio) and they can handle pretty wide pictures without the need to scroll. Other people, like me for instance still have old monitors with a 4:3 ratio and if a picture is too wide then you will see scroll bars in the browser, and that is a less desired effect.

According to the w3 organisation, that's the organisation that regulates and monitors the internet, 76% of the people use monitors with a resolution bigger than 1024 x 768. So if you want people to look at your pictures comfortably, you can use pictures of at least 800 pixels wide. This size will also look good for people who have bigger monitors. But if you make them wider than 800 some people will have to start scrolling from left to right to see it entirely, and that is very annoying. And the wider you make them, the more people will have to start scrolling.

All good points, Alex. Another thing I've noticed is that with wide pictures, it widens the whole post and to read the text, you have to scroll left and right with every line of text.

Maybe you didn't notice this:

I realize that posting images has been at times a chore for members.  I have finally gotten around to taking some time to address the issue.

I am testing a change to the forum software that will automatically resize images when they are posted.  Please note that this may 1) increase the time for your post to be create because you will be presumably uploading bigger files (which take longer to upload to the server) and then 2) the server must process the image if it is large to resize it appropriately.  The reason for resizing is two-fold.  Most modern digital cameras take images at very high resolutions which is necessary for printing purposes.  However, online that high resolution is not necessary.  The second reason is to reduce file size as we are charge for storage space by our website hosting provider. All new images that are upload and existing images attached to posts that exceed 1280x1024 pixels will be reduced to these dimensions.  I would request that members notify me if they experience any issues.

For some reason, I noticed that the forum states that the maximum total size for all attachments must be smaller than 500kb even though I have modified that setting.  So, it can be ignored.  You can now upload up to 20 attachments per post, they must be under 2MB each.  I will be monitoring our storage usage in the coming weeks and may tweak these settings if necessary.

Thanks.
