How to counteract discoloration?

Hello!

Please excuse my very post here being a probably stupid question - and worst of all, it is not related to a Festool-systainer but a Makpac... :-)

I recently ordered a Makita-device that was supposed to arrive in a systainer - but somehow the store screwed their online listing up and they just sent me the machine. As a sign of their goodwill, they sent me a Makpac belonging to a different piece of equipment.

Instead of removing the stickers on the systainer with hot air, they chose to use grain alcohol (or "Spiritus" as it called in Germany).

Long story short: The side of the systainer discolored quite a lot.

I am now wondering, if it is possible to still save the box... I tried scrubbing with a coarse kitchen-sponge and I feel like I am able to remove some of the light color and reveal the original color again...

But then, on the other hand, I am not 100% sure if the rubbing-alcohol just created a new layer that that I am just scratching away or if I am removing a whole layer of the box.

Any ideas?

Wet sand and buff. Or think of it as the box is already broken in and ready to work. No need to worry about scratches.

Welcome to the forum!  [smile]

Try wiping with ABS/PVC pipe cleaner. Should be able to take it own to new color. Do a test spot first.

Trey heating it with a heat gun.  sometimes that helps to return colour to abs cabinet edging when it is stressed.

Why are you "trying" anything ?

Why don't you just return it to the place you ordered it for replacement ?  They made the mess, let them clean it up.  They should send you a new one with the stickers still applied.

Mostly because they gave me the box as a sign of their goodwill... The other option would be, that they say "We put the 'comes in a systainer' by mistake on our website, also it said 'Machine only' on the invoice, so we are object to your claim. Please send back the machine and we will refund you"... But the price was/is so low, I would rather keep it ;-)

. Well that explains it.... [wink]

pc - I'm pretty sure I understand their position.

However, I really don't see this as "goodwill" on their part .  Honor your advertisement as it clearly wasn't out of the realm of what was reasonable.

Some Makita tools used to come is systainers. They now come in makpaks. Clearly THEY messed up THEIR advert.

I'm not accepting : "it's on the invoice either"    What if they wrote NO WARRANTY ?  Or decided to write double the advertised price on it? Or changed any of the other terms without disclosing them to you first ???  Would you be so accepting of those changes ?

Goodwill would be to have sent you a new makpak in good condition, not some orphan box that has the plague.  If that's good enough , they should be proud to display it in their shop .

AN employee made a mistake, fair enough.  We've all been there.  You or you bosses have to own it and make good on that mistake when it happens though.
