Ok. As some of you may know, I'm completely lost when it comes to using routers. Is there an easy way to route circular depressions? Or do I need to make some kind of jig. What I'm looking to make for some friends is in the image below.
One option is to make a simple template out of hardboard or MDF drilled with an appropriate forstner bit. Then use double stick tape and rout with a top bearing guided pattern bit. Making multiples if needed would then be easy.
Does it have to be done with a router? Can it be two layers?
If those are 25mm diameter, get a 25mm forstner bit. Drill all the way through a piece that is the thickness of the depression depth (1/4" ?). And then just layer it on top of another piece.
25mm depressions/openings. I thought about doing it in layers and forgot about buts with bearings for an MDF template. I can probably just use a forstner bit either way. The key will be to keep it as thin and light as possible, as these will be used for a table top war game. Thanks for helping out a woodworking idiot
I think the plan detailed by Seth and Dick is a good one. Using a pattern bit is easier than you think (if you haven't tried that before) as long as your template is properly attached. Do you have a spindle sander? If so, you will likely want to run the holes around the spindle for a quick sand after drilling with the forstner bit. Other than that, I think once you get the set up taken care of, you should be able to make a lot of these fairly quickly.
