How to strip paint from plaster?

Hi there,

I have a number of rooms in my house that I'm currently renovating and need to strip the old paint before filling and re-painting.  I can't afford a Planex and have been looking at the RO 150 which I would also be able to use for finishing other projects.  I currently have an RO 90 which I've used to sand filler.

Does anyone have any experience with stripping old paint and/or recommendations for abrasives?  I couldn't find many examples via a quick search.  At the moment I've tried a stripping knife but I think it might take me all year at the speed it's coming off.

Do you really need to remove it?  Assuming it's stuck that well, can't you just overpaint?  And if it's flaking off, it shouldn't be too much trouble.

I've used the RAS 115 with great  success as the

other Festool sanders didn't cut the mustard. Too

many coats of paint and the other sanders toke

too long to sand down to plaster.

Enter the RAS with 24 grit Saphir and it worked great.

Hey,

some of it is flaking off as it looks like they didn't put a mist coat on the fresh plaster.  That's not too bad but I still don't fancy spending two days with a scraper when my time is better spent elsewhere.  Additionally, some of the application in other rooms is so bad I couldn't live with it just being painted over.  I'd prefer to strip it, fill and sand and start again.

Regarding the RAS 115 - that looks great but I'm not sure I can justify it.  At least with the RO I can use it on the cabinetry jobs I'm planning.  Still, I'll keep it in mind.

I own both sanders mentioned, and for interior work like you posted about, I would prefer the Rotex due to a more complete dust collection system as compared to the RAS115.
Having said that, is lead paint buried in older layers going to be a problem for you?
Sure, an RAS115 with Saphir will eat through stuff, but you can also leave a large divot or cupped trail with it if you're not careful.

So after continuing with my scraper and then trying my RO 90, today I put in an order for the RAS 115.  I spent two hours last night with my scraper and managed to clear about a square meter.  Ergh!

But in other news, I had a result on the RAS.  I just found one in a clearance sale for £130 delivered.  [tongue]

Just ordered a RAS115 myself.  Dearest mummy decided she didn't want to listen to me(again, lol), painted her sunning deck the same dark brown I'd just used to retrim her Tudor.  It's too hot on her feet.  Wants the paint stripped.

I'd be very carefull with a RAS on plaster. Plaster is way to soft to stand the RAS and you'll eat it away very quickly.

Alex,

thanks.  I've got a few grits of Saphir up to 80g so I'll have a go and see how I get on.  If I have to re-skim it then so be it - it's all a learning curve for me.
