I think I want to jump on the festool bandwagon and think the domino is going to be my first purchase. It's admittedly hard to swallow the price plus the domino kit with the tenons and extra cutters. Can anyone recommend a place where I can rent one first or a dealer they'd suggest?
Thank you,

Domino is a great tool - one of the best from Festool and really has no equal from competitors in my mind.

Looks like you have maybe three Festool dealers in the Austin area.  Have you been in the stores to get a demo?  Festool has a 30-day no questions asked return policy from any of their authorized dealers.  Have you considered that?

I personally like to support local dealers -

I would grab a domino and some 5mm dominos (not the full set) and gove it a run for 30 days. You can return it if you don't like it for a full refund other than the 5mm dominos. If you buy the full set of dominos now you won't be able to return those. This way you wouldn't be out any money other than the small domino pack. If you decide to keep it, get the full set and I assure you, you will use all of the 5mm dominos over time anyway.

I doubt you will find one for rent.

If you have a local dealer with a demo unit they might let you bring in some pieces to use their demo unit;  I've never tried that.  Some dealers are more acomdating then others.

The tool, tenons and cutters are expensive, but you'll love it.  I finally popped for one a few months ago, after years of thinking about it.  I wish I had done it long ago.

Most (all?) dealers have a 30-day return if you don't like it.

BUT -- don't use that 30-day return as an ersatz rental; that mucks it up for everybody.

As you know all dealers charge the same price, so the bad news is they don't compete on price.

BUT -- the good news is that they all compete on service.  So you should be able to find a local dealer that you will like;  if not, the online dealers deliver very quickly.

My $0.02

You will also need a dust extractor, you can't use it without one.  Otherwise, the chips will clog up the mortice.

To be honest, pretty much any brand of shop vac will work for the Festool domino, routers, tracksaws and planers.  All you need is a hose adapter on the tool end.

I would recommend Woodcraft of Austin. I've worked in the majority of the Woodcraft stores throughout the country and the staff in Austin is among the best.
