I found one! A couple of guys spoke very highly of this measuring tape on the Metric thread, so I found one available on Ebay that would ship to the US. I had to work late last night, so I just found in in the mail stack this morning. After work today, I'll have a new toy for the shop!

I'm jealous - that looks sweet!

I'm hoping that Tom Bellemare has success in importing them for us, saving the hassle of dealing with feebay. I'd much rather buy from somebody who supports this forum.

I haven't Googled them yet, what's interesting and unique about them over something similar here in the US? [huh]
Known for being accurate?

I have both the 3 and 6 m versions.
I like the 6 meter version the most. It has a nice belt clip and fits better in your hand.
Both versions can measure inside dimensions and on the back they can measure vertically (6m) or diameter of tubes (3m).

And what all Tallmeters do have is a hard steel point which you can use as a mark-line. So no more hassle with a pencil (to thick) and all kind of deflections.
Only mark the material with the hard point and GO.
The Tallmeters originally were designed in 1954 by a Swedisch guy called Ture Anders Ljungberg.
From his initials comes the name TAL(meter).

I ordered from UK through Amazon from Big Red Toolbox got the 3m version. $24.95 shipped to Seattle. Took about a week despite the 4-6 week estimate for shipping. Works great and looks just like pic of OP.

I have the 3M one and am extremely happy with it.  I will probably pick up a 6M soon.  The 3M is great for small and medium projects and is super light, but occasionally a longer tape is required.

I was about to buy the 3m Hultafor when I spotted the Festool 3m tape rule. I know that on a thread somewhere someone has said that their Festool rule had a defect but it has the features of the Hultafor plus a little window where you can take a reading as well as the normal way.

I want to have one of each in my hand and then make a decision.

Has anyone else tried or compared both?

Peter

I don't have my Festool rule on me at the moment but I don't recall it having the scratch marker feature that the Talmeter has.

This popped up in my Amazon recommended items today.  It has a video with a short demonstration.  No scribe marker as with the Hultafor, but it does have some other features.

This is good to hear.  I added one to my Amazon cart but was looking around at other options based on the expected delivery date.  Guess is will order now.

BTW, welcome to FOG.

I have  both  hultafor and BMI (festool) tapes.

I like both of them because of their features.

I'll get them both out sometime tomorrow if I get time and take pictures.

I know mine is not festool but the festool is just the BMI rebranded.

I'd buy one in a second if they had an Imperial version. I have the festool (metric) it's ok

Many thanks JMB - I think that they are both good but rather like the BMI/Festool one because of the extra advantage of the dial window.

Here is a link to an Swedish comparison between them both, maybe you could use Google translate if you want to read the text. Basically what he says the main difference is the ability to scribe with Hultafors.

As a Swede myself I use mostly Hultafors for all my measuring they have a good product line, my Talmeter that I use is atleast 20 year and still works fine. Thinking about buying a new 6m, the one I have is 3m.

I finally got time to open it up and play with it a bit. My initial impressions are positive. It has a sturdy feel and I think will hold up well to some abuse. From the pictures, I thought the tab on the back for inside measures was plastic, but it's actually metal. I think that's good; it will stand up better and longer.

Normally I have only trusted measuring tapes for cruder work. Cutting two by fours to frame a wall, figuring out how long to make a wire, etc. In the workshop, I've always favored straight rules as being more accurate. I've never really warmed up to the concept of the end of a measuring tape moving in a slot to account for inside and outside measuring.

This one may be changing my opinion. I have a cheap Stanley here on the desk and it's doesn't compare well. The Hultafors appears to encourage me to measure more accurately. It has clear metal tabs on the body to measure on the tape, where the Stanley just has the curved plastic of the body. The end of the tape on the Hultafors does not move, like mentioned above. I thought about this for a moment and realized it was made of much thinner metal so it didn't need to move.

For now, the Hultafors has me thinking of it's talmeter as a more precision measuring device than the traditional US based measuring tapes. Only time in the shop will tell and I still have to compare it's measuring to my best standards in the shop. Don't laugh, years a got I got a Grizzley hook ruler that was wrong by an 1/8 of an inch.

Hit post to quick, I wanted to add, I think I need one of the larger 6M tapes, but I don't have a source for that yet.

I wanted to get the 6m tape some time ago, but couldn't find a source for U. S. delivery. I bought the 3m and have been pleased with it. Today, I thought I would check again for the 6m tape. I found it on Amazon. I'm pretty sure it is the same supplier from which I got the 3m one. It's going to take about a month to get to me so I assume it's being shipped from the U.K.

I have had 4 festool tapes, all given to me by my dealer. they are rubbish. one only lasted a day in the workshop brfore seizing.
