HVLP - 3-Stage or 4-Stage

I purchase the 3stage Fuji. I am very pleased with it's performance. I have sprayed latex thinned with flotrol, oil based thinned with paint thinner, which I am painting a cedar square picket fence. It's great getting in behind the rails & gate X bracing. I have sprayed water based General Finish with good results. I do need more practice, but well worth the investment. I did purchase additional tips, #3 & #5. Good luck. Don

I have the Fugi Q4, would would never conceder anything less than a 4 stage. My next choice would be the Apollo but nothing smaller than their 1025.
For latex paint an HVLP system is not the best answer, with a pressure pot they are not to bad but still not the best way to go. If you do get a pressure pot get a 2 gallon minimum, that way you can just insert a 1 gallon can in it. You do not have to clean the pot as the paint stays in the original vessel.
I have all of the Fugi tips and you still need Floetrol to get it to layout properly.
I much prefer a pressurized gravity gun, easier to clean.
For latex an air assisted airless pump (very costly currently) or a conventional airless is your best bet. If you only need to spray latex once in a while you may want to conceder renting or buying a small airless.
The gun is the most important part of the system, the better the tips and gun the better the finish.

The new Fine Homebuilding has an article about exterior painting. Compares sprayers and doing it by hand. I just got in the mail about 2 hours ago, so I haven't read it. If you plan to paint exterior stuff like a fence and deck, I would not go with an HVLP. I have the Fuji Q3 for furniture and I absolutely love it. I've done everything from shellac to milk paint (General brand thinned by about 10%). I'll post an update when I read the FHB article.
If you decide to go with Fuji gravity new style gun and 3M PPS, the right angle adapter is #24.
I purchased my gun from Roger Phelps (highly recommended) but he does not sell PPS system. Purchased mine from TCP Global. #24 adapter was about $20. You will need a pressure cup and liners. I went with mini pressure cup. If you need part numbers I can most likely find my invoice and advise.
