I really, really do wish...

I had the option to buy tools without the Systainers.

I'm 'way past hauling tools to jobsites(I haul my plans, some nails and my not-insubstantial a** , maybe a few 2x4s at the most), use my tools in my shop and have plenty of organization already in place. So the Sys boxes wind up just absorbing space I have better use for.

Sure I can sell them, but what will I get for them and how much time will I have to spend in the process?

So I'd really prefer the option not to buy them in the first place. I wouldn't expect a full retail discount but anything would be better than having to find a place to store them, dealing with Craigslist ads, or feeling bad about putting them on the curb on Friday(putting them on the curb doesn't exactly strike me as being "Green").

Consider: The LR32 system, #583291 at $425.00: The 583290 hole drilling set, the clamps, and the bits all total $364. So it would cost me $61.00 for a SYS 1 and the plastic inserts which I don't need. In this case I had the option to buy the 583290 and the bits (since I already have clamps) for close to $100 less and still get everything I needed to use the 32mm system(which rocks!). So I bought an extra 5mm bit and a couple of quick clamps. Festool ended up with a little more of my money and I ended up with more tools that I could actually put to use. What you'd call a win-win situation.

But how much of what I paid for the OF 1400, the TS 55 or the OF1010 could I have saved to spend on accessories if I hadn't had to pay for the Sys 2 or 3 cases? Festool got my money, I got plastic boxes that are valueless to me and will cost me time and effort to dispose of. I'd call that a win-lose situation with me on the dirty end of the stick....

I'm sure this has been hammered to death in the forum and I'm spitting into the wind, but this particular discussion is called the "Festool Wish List" so here's mine...

Best,
Bill

P.S. Anyone who need an OF 1010, OF 1400 or TS55 Systainer and is willing to meet me on my schedule between the Wade Green exit on I-75 and the Towne Lake exit on 575 is welcome to them. Just get in touch.

Bill, don't you think that having the systainers available should you decide to sell a given tool in the future is better to keep them?  Some may think that they otherwise be stolen tools without a systainer to go with, or simply they would at least likely want the systainer that would have normally come with it, and without it, would be low balling you more than normal on an offer.  Just something to consider.

Even though I have lots of systainers and my family and I use them for use them for lots of purposes other than storing tools, I agree with you that Festool in North America should give us the option of buying tools without systainers.  They provide this choice in many other parts of the world.

Frank, I can't believe you said that.  Then again, I've seen your systainer wall that you can stack up. Lol.

oh, i am really surprised that this option is naina. in germany you can always get for example the of 1400 ebq or the of 1400 ebq-plus, the plus-version being the one that comes in a systainer. you can order all the tools in a cardboard box (although i wouldnt, because for me, the systainers are a very important "system" feature).

Of course you can, but as Bill said in the post that kicked off this thread, it should not be necessary to go through the hassle of doing so.

Yea shipping Systainers is not cheap so you do not really recover much of the purchase price when reselling them. I stack mine in the attic and keep them for when I upgrade to the latest and greatest Festool. Have to believe it would be easier to resell with the Systainer. For my tiny shop, I find the Systainers to be a real pain for most of the tools as they take up lots of space. I just put the tools on shelving. Now Systainers are kind of required for things like the OF2200 accessory set.

I can see why dealers would not be in favour of this.  They would have to carry extra inventory.

I could not agree more.  The only reason people would think a tool without a Systainer is stolen is because Festool does not offer us (in NA, anyways) the opportunity to buy one without.  Although, I certainly wouldn't assume the tool's provenance just because it came with Systainer - if I was worried, the receipt is the only thing that would do it.

The worst example I can think of are the cleaning sets.  When I got my whatever-cleaning-set I bought, I promptly had a big systainer which sits idle.  I can see a person working onsite using the systainer to hold the hoses, IF it weren't so dang near impossible to get all the pieces back in.  I can tell you my dealer spent more than 5 minutes trying to wrangle the hose, tubes and heads back in one he showed me, and I have a hard time imagining tradespeople doing the same.  Then again, I've never seen a single tradesperson in Canada using Festool onsite.

As someone else points out, however, I'm sure that Festool and their dealers love the idea.  They get to automatically sell what should be an accessory, and don't have to stock the inventory for it.

However, many if not most of the tools sold by competitors come in blow-molded cases which are just as bulky and also cannot be ordered without cases.  They're probably not nearly as expensive as systainers, though.

I have one systainer filled with extra plug-it cords and another with vac bags.  Might fit one out to store all those router accessories.

Seriously, I would love the option to buy a tool without the systainer.

I never buy tools with it in my mind I am going to sell.

That being said I have sold a lot of Festools and I sold many tools with no systainer. Actually, a lot people asked I take the Systainer out of the equation!

The Systainers are expensive to ship, BUT if you package right and stay away from certain areas you can get quite a bit back for the systainer. Part of it is to try to sell more than one to the same person.

Festools are easy to sell just check my classifieds to verify that(well I guess some sold have been deleted).

I wish they offered the tools without the systainer as well.

Well, like my wife, we all have strong opinions!!!!

I'm the complete opposite. Systainers allow me to function and organize my tiny shop. (Tiny being 7 by 12.) With the systainers being so modular I can keep the tools organized and clear of the work I am doing. Moving a stack of systainers takes seconds if I need to create space. The same cannot be said for a shelf or contents on a shelf. I find tools on a shelf to be a PITA as tools and accessories can become separated (i.e. guide rods or cords.)

I can see at some point I will have to build an addition or get a new shop in order to get new tools regardless if they come in a systainer or not!

I agree with that.  I was able to compress a bunch of stuff (other tools and such) into a relatively small foot print because of the systainers.

i would never dream of having the tools without the systainer. i will take them out in the shop to use them but keep the accesories in them with the sys close at hand. it is amazing how much space is saved with the systainer system . i will buy more to put other tools in them soon.
i think this part of the system is the best.
the time saved moving the tools around and bringing on site will easily pay for them.

Well, I'm just glad I can decide for myself whether I want to buy a tool with or without systainer.

I'm constantly buying and selling systainers and tools as I see fit. I also don't adhere to the idea of 1 tool per systainer, for instance, I normally put 3 or 4 sanders in one sys 3 when I go somewhere and I stuff a sys 4 or 5 to the brim with hand tools and other stuff.

Ditto that.
