I wish I hadn’t noticed that…

I was watching a TV show last night—an episode of FBI.

In the episode the FBI team has to rescue a young woman being held hostage at commune.  It was a Waco/Branch Davidian Compound based episode.

The woman was chained to an upright post on a bunk bed.  They had to free her from that post, so one of the agents went looking for a bolt cutter.

That would have been fine before Hi-Def TV.  But the bunk bed was made up of two twin beds made from tubular steel.  The beds could be used individually or could be stacked.

The bottom of the tube had a reduced diameter allowing a slip in fit.  On high def equipment you could clearly see the seam between the upper and lower bunk posts.

So the agent goes looking for a bolt cutter and I’m yelling at the TV, “There are two of you.  Just lift the upper bed off and have her stand on the mattress  and you can go.”

So for the rest of the show I had to keep saying to myself, “Just imagine that the bunks could not decouple.”  For me the show failed on that single detail.

This image is not of high enough resolution to see the seam.  It looks to be the same as the one on the TV show.  It can de-couple to make two beds.

I take your point about Hi-Def TV. I worked for about a decade making props, models, and doing special mechanical effects for films and TV and well remember the change in requirements for TV. I moved on when CGI became more efficient.

But this bed frame does require an Allen wrench to disassemble. The end sections are welded and then fastened to the connecting rails with button head cap screws.

I was going to say something similar.  The way I know this isn't meant to be separated into two beds is that the bottom bunk would have no headboard if it was removed from the top bunk.  Most "double-up" twin beds that can be used both ways will be designed to look like a matched pair when separated.  This piece comes apart into two sets of rails and two end pieces.

The one on TV did not show any fasteners.

I do not like dumb stuff on TV or in books (“he clicked off the safety on his revolver”.

And I don’t like dumb stuff on houses, like tiny shutters that would only cover a half of a window.

I dunno, apart from being an indication of good taste, they can not only be attractive, but also extremely practical, like this one!

I understand the purpose these shutters achieve—balancing open spaces.  But some part of my brain says, “Stupid, stupid, stupid”, and it offends me.

I think they offend everyone, well almost everyone! ;-)

Well, no.  In this case it makes me laugh. [eek]
