anyone have ideas or designs they have seen for this type of frame? i need to finish this in the next few days so have little time to look for inspiration, any help would be much appreciated(rough size of finished frame 39"x34")

With only this information and not knowing about your tools, etc., You could do rosette blocks in the corners and then butt frame material into them.

You could do corners that had 45 degree wedges.

Look at window casings for ideas.

Arts and Crafts/Mission and that style also offered a lot of frames that were not mitered.

M&T joinery picture frames are nice.  They're A&C / Craftsman style usually.

With a Domino on hand they're a cinch to make.  You just need really precise 90-degree cuts.  You can even use pocket hole screws to hold the frame together while the glue dries with the Dominos.

Cut parts, Domino, assemble, then rout the rabbet for the picture/glass/backing, whatev, and finish.  Easy one day project if you just need a functional frame (without extra details)

thanks guys, yes its that type of thing im looking for, arts&crafts, green&green, theres one featured in the recent 'fine woodworking'(224),i just haven't seen a design that stands out, looking for something a little 'different'

Check out the Woodwhisper. Search Frames. Lots of examples of Greene and Greene.

My understanding is the complete opposite.....butt joints(90 degrees) at the corners.

Here are some pics of a couple that I've built. The first one is greene and greene, and the "house" frame can have lots of variations that always look good. Also not that one is a mirror.
