My only point was that I would think the country should be a requirement and the state/provence could remain optional.  But, I do see your point that the state/provence could also be of assistance.

I did take the time last night to update the code on the forum to require location for new user registrations.  It has a note that country should be entered at a minimum.  This is the first step toward helping us identify a member's general location so we can help answer their questions.  I will work on the second portion of this which is updating existing accounts that do not have a location entered when time permits.

I have modified the forum's software so that if your location is NOT populated in your profile, it will automatically enter your country when you log into the forum based on your internet IP address.  If your profile already has a location entered, it should not be overwritten.  As an example, if you're located in the U.S., it would enter "UNITED STATES (US)" automatically.  Bah-dah-bing!

Edit: After reading the last few posts, just a note about this.  I don't want to show anything more specific than country to protect members' choice for privacy.  A country is non-specific enough that member's can protect their anonymity as I feel it should be their own individual choice.

Mandatory location has been requested by members on several forums that I have belonged to, but this is the first of these forums where the request has actually been acted upon.

Could just be that Brian Livingstone hasn't logged in since the changes were made...

Geolocation is not perfect. There can still be instances where the geolocation cannot identify the location. In those instances, the location will not be autopopulated. As of this morning, there had been about 20 accounts autoupdated. This is better than what we had even if it's not perfect.

Edit: In the case of Brian Livingstone, he has not logged in since the changes took place around 10pm EST last night.
