I'm beginning to dislike systainers

If the purchase of that Kapex is making you feel financially vulnerable and want to sell that 1010, let me know.

;)

Hey, Hey! i have first dibs on the 1010 [big grin]

Calm down guys the 1010 isn't going anywhere! I haven't even got the chance to take it for a test run yet!

I had about 1 1/2 hr today (while my son was sleeping) to make some more progress.

[attachthumb=#1]

On the driver side I have the Kapex on the floor with the 75 and Mini above it.
In the next rack back I have a perfect spot for my T-loc minis, right in front of the wheel well, I'll just put down some type of stop to keep them from sliding out. I ordered a Sys1 with boxes to replace my metal nail/screw bin. I also ordered a sys2 to put my laser and first aid kit in. And fit my Bosch hammer into another sys2. Both of those I will pick up some foam to fill them out.
I will be removing the wood racking behind that and rebuilding it to slide the Planex in on edge and building some custom shelving, boxes or pull outs to fit all of my dewalt drills, impacts, jigsaw and batteries.

On the passenger side things are mostly the same but I got rid of the drawers and made space for the 1010( and an Lr32 kit down the road). A sys1 with my Milwaukee driver, multitool, palm nailer, batteries and charger. I also ordered two more Sys1 with boxes to replace some other small parts bins I have.

I also found some spots for odd shaped items and just have to come up with something to secure them in place. I should have some time later next week to make some more progress.

Hey Bikeboy     thanks good pics of the van setup.    i havent gotten to study them but it does look like there is some wasted space that could be utilized by dtiching the stock shelves and building you own out of plywood.    i would make both sides aprox 16" deep instead of 12" so you could fit the systainers in rotated 90 degrees from what they are now saving you on the width.   i would just tell you to plan plan plan.   make a list of everything that needs to go in there, try to group them near like tools, sketch it out on graph paper or sketchup, measure 10 times (its alot easier to change the layout on paper than with wood). you will no doubt make adjustments as you go but no matter what you will have a much better system than you have now.    there are alot of great setups out there if you do some searching. look at the ron paulik ultimate mobile workshop (i think thats what it is called)

quite honestly it is a time and money investment but it will really pay off in the long run with efficiency.   im sure you could pop those old shelves on craigslist and make a few bucks anyway

im in a similar boat as you, it seems that you do a little of everything therefore need all sorts of tools with you at all times.  do you use your ct36ac and your planex all the time or are those items that could be stored at home and then brought in when needed??   think about that for all your tools

another benifit of rebuilding is your kapex will fit!   gotta get that in there!!!!    i'm jealous

John

I would have to say I agree with everything John said. I use an A.R.E DCU with custom shelving to acomodate systainers combined with a Bedslide. I get two side bays 12"x16"x~65" (if I remember) for all my systainers and I keep bulky items like my CT Mini, chop saw, stand, etc. on the Bedslide. Easy access to everything from outside the vehicle. If I need material I can unload the Bedslide or take my trailer along. Of course right when I got things the way I wanted them I was T-boned and for now I'm back to the truck this was supposed to replace, but thats my luck...

Back to the shelving - make lots of drawings and accurate full size templates. Use cardboard for the templates and scribe them to the walls of your van noting any protrusions and attachment points and their locations. lay out all your tools and take a picture of it to help you think through the planning and make sure you don't forget something. In my case I decided it was worth it to invest in systainers to house a majority of my tools - its hard to match that kind of tool density with the myriad of cases put out by various manufacturers. Another benefit of systainers is combining them with a hand truck to move most of what I need for the day onsite or off in one trip.

Do some head scratching, make lots of drawings, and take good numbers and you can't go wrong.

I finally had time to finish the makeover today. Here are some finished pictures...at least for now [tongue]

[attachimg=#]

I built the new section of racking at the back including some drawer pull outs with my drill/ drivers in Kaizen foam and a vertical pullout with a few things that just didn't fit elsewhere. I also picked up some Riptie hangers to put my cord and hose on the door. I rounded out my collection of systainers getting some of my other tools into them and I am still working on getting Kaizen foam in them. I also added an LR32 kit, an RO150 and a MFT clamping kit to the mix.

I think that the next tool I buy is going to be very expensive...I'll have to buy a larger van to fit it! [eek]

Very nice man.

How well does the Planex transport on edge?

At some point I will get to racking out my van, but at this point, I keep knocking out work, and simply piling stacks of systainers in the back with bungees.

Nice fit and finish.

Awesome Man, Looks Great!!

I have drawers built, drawer slides attached just need to actually build my cabinet in the van...just been to busy/lazy to actually do it...Seeing yours finished I think i know what im doing on Monday  [tongue]

Thanks, the Planex has no issues on edge, it fits so nicely in it's foam there is no movement.

That's the key, finding a day to just do it! I got most of the rear cabinet done six weeks ago but have been driving around since then with the vertical slide out unfinished with the few tools just piled into the space. I was so tired of looking at it!
