Im trying to source some good quality birch ply sheets in 18mm

i have enquired with them all as trade as that is what it is and they are all fine with that.

re grades i was hoping if i get b/bb then it will come and be very good on one face if the edge is slightly damaged i will cut it off etc i dont have time and money to go and fetch it would rather just pay for delivery i thought the grading system ensures that you get what you order ?

It does, what I meant was that you often get better than what you order. The grade is the minimum you'll get.

I buy a lot of birch ply and you will find that grades vary depending on its country of origin. Here is the brochure form dhh timber giving you the full grading break down.

Dhh timber are wholesale so it comes straight from the factory missing out all the middle men. If I'm buying in bulk I will use them, but if buying a few sheets I use a local supplier who is the next company down the chain from them.

I buy BB and pay  (inc vat):
9mm £28
12mm £33
18mm £40 (discount a little as my most popular)
24mm £58

I would also agree with [member=1725]jonny round boy[/member] and collect the sheets so you can double check you are happy with the grain and for damage. I learnt that the hard way!

Can you take a photo of your hand holding an iPad or something showing the PDF?

I will print out the pdf and post it to you [member=20162]Wuffles[/member] so you can take a photo of it, email it back to me and I will post that up  [wink]

Fax it. You have my number.

should of listened to you guys the ply has come and has plugs both sides and is sold as B/BB as far as i can read anywhere B grade can not have plugs in it. I really couldn't get out to pick it up and the guy ensured me it was plug free one side.
what shall i do now ?

Ring them up & tell them to come back & collect it, and deliver what you asked (and paid) for. B/BB grade should be completely free of plugs/repairs on the B side.

Alternatively, get them to collect & refund, and go elsewhere.

what is the difference between short grain and long grain ply ? what is best for what application ? i want it for kitchen cab doors so wondering which is more stable or best out of short or long ?

Short and long refer to the grain direction on the visible layers (top and bottom). Short is grain parallel to the short side of the sheet, etcetera.

yeah thats what i thought but is it just a look thing ? i see the short grain is normally used more for bending and i want them to be as stable as poss
cheers

Yes just visual. Long grain is what everyone normally stock.

Bit of a thread hijack, but on a similar vein.

I'm about to purchase some BB/CP for about £37 a sheet for 18mm, will this be ok for making up some pan drawers for the missus do you think oh knowledgeable ones? I've checked with them and they reckon (as people do on the phone) that their BB is more like a B in reality, but it's still called a BB.

Yea should be fine and I would agree with this.

The last drawers were made out of construction grade, so whatever it is it'll be posh. I believe that to be a decent price too, someone chime in if not.
