Im trying to source some good quality birch ply sheets in 18mm

its a good price but it wont be like b grade if its bb as it will have plugs on it both sides and will not be very smooth, everyone says bb is like b but its not, if you dont care about plugs or your painting it then its fine, but that is a good price who's it from ?

Apart from the fact the [member=26162]Jimmy FineCut[/member]  said it'd probably be ok?

It's not plugged both sides, why would you think it would be? Why would you think it'd not be smooth both sides?

The 18mm BB birch I buy normally has a around 6 plugs one side and very rarely it will have one or two plugs the other. Now the 24mm bb birch I buy only has around 3 plugs one side and never on the other.

From my experiance birch ply grades do vary from the factory and possibly standards have dropped over the years.

I don't know what you mean by it won't be very smooth? Birch ply will come sanded to around the 180 grit mark and with a quick sand with 320 grit will be glass smooth, so if your buying rough birch ply you have a very low grade ply.

[member=20162]Wuffles[/member] I am sure the missus will be happy with bb grade ply at £37 (the price I pay)

im saying it will be fine for what your doing but yes all the grades and different suppliers are completely different quality's and untill you see them you just dont know, i think standards have dropped. I have ordered b/bb and ended up with bb/cp the supplier didnt even notice or know until i complained as b should not have any plugs for me plugs are a complete no no would rather see the knots etc, also the cp can potentially be a bit grainy, the grain is a bit rougher than the bb its still smooth but compared to the top stuff its not as smooth but its 1/ 3rd the price.

A sheet of 24mm bb Russian birch ply I currently have in the workshop. No plugs, but one side does have a thinner top ply.

International Plywood probably know what they're doing [member=53698]sucker 4 tools[/member], that's where it's coming from - probably same place [member=26162]Jimmy FineCut[/member] in a round about way.
