Imperial ruler for TS 55

I have been using the TS 55 for about a year now and this should explain why I want to make an imperial ruler; is the metric ruler on the TS 55 adjusted to allow the height for the guide rail?  I guess I never tried to figure it out.  It's just a guessing game for me until the blade sticks down below the stock that I am cutting a bit.  You would think that I could remember the number for they typical 1/2" and 3/4" stock that I usually cut! Not so much!Haha

No, it ain't, for some reason- but the math is easy, and will help us in the long run- any math exercises, that is

So I take it that you don't want an imperial ruler. Do you mean that the metric ruler is NOT set up to allow for the thickness of the guide rail?

Cool. Thanks guys. Since i am making a ruler from scratch, do you think I should allow for the thickness of the guide rail. Me personally, I will never use the TS 55 w/o the rail.
I think I will just leave it the same only use imperial.

Thx again all!

Tim,

Count me in on the imperial ruler and YES, by all means allow for the guide. I'd love to be able to set the depth to say 3/4" and know I will cut through a 3/4" sheet of ply.

Thanks
Jack

I do, occasionally, use the saw without the guide.  But I would rather subtract in my head for those few situations, rather then add in my head as I now do for the more frequent situations.

Of course, being as I use metric, it is much easier to add and subtract in my head.  [poke]

Dude - better set that to 21/32 or whatever the ply companies are making these days. [wink]

I'd love to get a copy of your add on ruler for my TS 55.  I also vote Yes for adding the thickness of the guide [big grin]

This is the black foil I chose to use for the ruler. Anyone who wants one PM me.  I'll tell you where to send a self addressed stamped envelope.

Sorry Guys.  I will replace the picture with a new one

Tim,

It looks to me that unless the pen in your photo is exceptionally large, that your scale is incorrect.  There is NOT a one-to-one relationship between the scale on a TS55 and the markings on a metric ruler.  The TS55's scale has almost a 2:1 ratio with reality.

I would also suggest that your scale have a zero marking.  Hope this helps.

You are exactly right!  I actually did the artwork for the ruler without having the ts55 with me.  Rookie mistake!  I'll get it fixed.  Thx Corwin

Here is the finished product. I have mounted the (imperial only) ruler to my ts55 but I also made a metric and imperial version for anyone who wants one.  I have mounted mine directly over top the metric ruler but for those of you who want to allow for the thickness of the guide rail, just simply mount it a little bit higher to allow for that thickness.  I may change mine once I try out cutting some material.

If you would like to have one or both of these rulers I would be happy to give it to you. Just Send a self addressed envelope with a stamp to:

Mansfield, Oh  44907     FIXED! [smile]

Thx everyone,

I remember when I got my TS 55 from Bob Marino and was all concerned about metric.

Well, after a short time of using the metric system I quickly realized at how calculations were and have since switched.

I was setting up a large Felder Planer Jointer yesterday with a digital readout and HAD to switch it over to metric for the calibration just because I could not wrap my head around the imperial calculations.

I have tried and tried to convert to metric. Have purchased metric rulers, tape measures, converted my Incra stuff over and still can't get my head around it. The only way I am switching over is when the Canuckians finally invade us and do a total mandated changeover!!!  [poke] It sucks being old and no longer able to learn.  [sad]

Same here Peter!  Everything in my shop is imperial.  It just makes sense to convert the only metric tool I have to imperial.  The plan is to replace all my tools with Festool.  Once I do I will be making rulers for those as well.  Send me an envelope and I will send you a ruler. You will LOVE it!

Thank you so much for making these!  The metric markings have been my only issue with my TS55.  I'll definitely be sending you a request for one.

Glad I can help Bob.  That is exactly what I thought!

Sent my request and envelope - thanks!  I threw a dollar in there so you could buy a cup of coffee...

Note to others, the correct zipcode is:  44907 (there's an extra 9 in the above listed zipcode...)

this is a pretty funny post and an great idea  [thumbs up]

I stopped using the ruler myself, I just lower the blade till it meets the surface,  set the stop and then drop it another notch

Tim,

Request sent.  Should see it by next week.  Looking forward to cleaning my saw, blade and placing the decal.

Now, what about a TS75?  [eek]

Thanks, Sam.
