Imperial ruler for TS 55

Samo said:
Tim,

Request sent.   Should see it by next week.  Looking forward to cleaning my saw, blade and placing the decal.

Now, what about a TS75?   [eek]

Thanks, Sam.

Is the ruler on the ts55 and ts75 the same size?  I don't have a ts75 so someone will have to tell me.  Is the ration the same?

No, the ratio on the TS75's scale is more like 1.7:1.  And, of course, the scale range is from 0 to 75mm, rather than the 0 to 55mm on the TS55.

If the ratio is different, I don't think I am comfortable making a ruler for the ts75.  I like to have the saw here.  In fact, the ruler I made for the ts55 was wrong until I brought my saw into work to cross reference it.

Sorry for all the ts75 guys out there. [sad]

I have gotten 3 envelopes in the mail already and will be sending those rulers out Mon. morning.

Thanks for all the interest Festoolers!

For all of you with a TS75 looking for one of Tim's rulers, hang on.  We're working on it.  Stay tuned!

Ken is going to work with me by lending me his TS75.  We will get all you 75 users out there set up!

Thx Ken!

Thanks Guys,

This is going to help me a lot in the field.  Unfortunately, I work hard and am often tiered and need a simple way to double check myself.

At work I'm surrounded by Imperial rules, on the table saw, the chop saw outfield tables, etc.

Guys never come up to me at work and ask, "Can you cut a clean grove in this to 15mm deep?".  8)  In the shop without distractions, I

work in Metric just fine.  [embarassed]  Just not my first language.

Q I haven't decided on the placement of the rule on my saw, waiting to have and test.  I did think of a question for you guys, I have

placed blue tape on the upper guard next to the existing scale with temp. lines for what ever project I wanted them for and was wondering

if there is any reason I might want the Festool scale in the future? I know the pointer is not long enough, but would placing the decal on

the outer side of the saw scale be a practical option?

Thanks, Sam.    Brice,  If you read this, I need your decal as well! [tongue]

I'm the same way, I still need to a little focus when working in Metric.

Ah Tim...this is like putting a heroin addict on methadone...you just end up prolonging the agony. I must admit that my first reaction to your thoughtful efforts was elation..."Yippee, I can finally stop trying to think European!", but after a moment of reflection I realized the inevitability of my Imperialist plight. Efforts of American hegemony aside, I'm afraid that we will not be successful in eventually ruling the world, and as such I'm stuck having to adapt to the tens based preference of my favorite tool maker. Maybe when we find a way to bomb/invade Germany (wouldn't that stand history on its head?) in the name of "spreading democracy" I'll finally be able to abandon the constant frustrations of metric functioning. Is it possible that we could convince our rulers that one of our nation's "vital strategic interests" is the abolition of the metric system (right up there with the fluoridation of our water as a commie plot). ;)

Hey...does anybody know if Germany has any oil?

Sorry for the tongue in cheek...just couldn't resist. Countless are the times that I've screwed the pooch by guesstimating metrically, but I'm nothing if not stubborn. I will not let this simple numbering system beat me. Everything in my shop that can be is now Festool (where's that band saw and planer that I wished for?), and I have to admit that I've bastardized my Italian band saw with many an Imperial upgrade, but the march of metricity is unyielding. I realize the inevitability of it all and I submit. ;)

My rambling diatribe notwithstanding, big kudos on the considerate offer. Even though I've not contributed here, as a long time lurker I can honestly say that your attitude is a reflection of what makes FOG such a wonderful resource. Now if I could just find a way to get Starrett to start making Festool-centric gear... :)

wow,

You bring up a good question about metric versus imperial. When you can't find three-quarter inch plywood at Home Depot anymore and the nearest to is labeled 19/32 you got to know we've moved to metric but we just don't want to admit to it.

If you're on this site you are using a computer, and therefore you probably know that using any sort of an Excel spreadsheet or any other program were you want to calculate your materials....  you know that 34/64th is not compatible with 1/8 or 1/2.

the thing is just memorizing what 16 inches on center is in millimeters. And the other common dimensions.

Just last week when I picked up MDF sheet goods that was labeled 4 x 8' it was not  that size! So I had to cut it down the fit the  8' area I needed.

Cheers,
Steve

Uhm, MDF is oversized (49"x97") for a reason;  the edges are easily dinged, so the additional inch allows you to cut it down to fit your 8' area rather than come up short...

The odd thing was it was 48" by 97"... not the 49" x 97" I expected.....  And oh yes....damage is easy to it.... agree..

Thanks for the insight.  I wish I could write like you do.  I'm just glad I can give back a little.

P.S. I think your avatar matches your writing style perfectly!

Saw sent.  It's in Tim's hands now or Fed Ex to be technical .

Thx Ken!  I look forward to getting it.  I'll send you a PM when I get it done and sent back out...unless you want me to just keep it for a day or week or...forever! HaHa

I figured you'd want to take it for a spin so I took out the ignition wires.  Just kidding, go ahead, be my guest since you don't have one yet, maybe you'll wind up buying one after you try it out.

Shane, do I get Festool credits towards a Carvex or CMS for letting potential buyers demo my tools?  [wink]

Wow what are Festool credits? [eek]  If Fes is handing those out i'll take some!haha [big grin]

That is a great job.

I don't see what the issue is with metric though.  All sheet goods are sized in metric now, dividing and multiplying by 10 is about the easiest thing there is.

I bounce back and forth between the two, buy my lumber in imperial and trim kitchens in metric.

I have a ruler set up for the TS75 now.  Due to it being curved I have only set it up for imperial reading.  The metric/imperial version was just to crammed.
[attachimg=#]
I have added extra room at the top that lets the user set the ruler to allow for the thickness of the guide.  Or just set it to the same as the existing metric ruler.

For those of you that have gotten the TS55 rulers in the mail, I hope I have added enough room at the top of the ruler.  The rulers that you received in the mail do have more space above the zero mark that I have posted pictures of, I just hope it is enough.  I realized this after playing around with the placement of the ts75.

[smile] I would love to hear from anyone out there that I have sent rulers to. [smile]

Send me an envelope and I will be happy to send anyone a 75 ruler now.

P.S. Special Thanks to Ken  Nagrod for sending me your saw to use as a template for the ts75 ruler.  The ruler on your saw was just tacked in place.  I will send you a fresh one so you can mount where you want.
