Importing Festool Products From UK to USA?

Jonny,

In most developed nations there is a basic requirement that electrical equipment function at +/- 10% of nominal voltage.

My concern is to warn FOG members in the USA to be prudent about informal tool importation. It is the responsibility of every employer to ensure all equipment used by employees be approved. Generally the use of hand-held electric tools connected to power sources higher than 120v is not permitted by the USA UEC.

Therefore a USA employer needs to think long and hard about using equipment informally imported.

I wasn't arguing with that, you have a valid point. I was just confirming your earlier statement:

Maybe 240v Festools work swell on 230v or even 208v service.

And they will work fine. Whether you should do it or not due to US regulations is another matter.

[big grin]

Have to admit that in my US shop (garage), I just run by 240V UK tools off my generac generator (which I wheel outside).

Simply created an extension cord with NEMA male on one end and a UK female socket on the other.

Works like a charm!!

Cannot comment on issues related to jobsite use.  I am strictly a hobbyist!!

AS for importing, I have posted previously about what may be involved in bring NAINA products into the US from UK.  Not an experience I think one would want to repeat.

FEDEX is pricey and then you pay customs; you only get some of your VAt back because many companies charge a fee for processing.  Really only possible to get VAT back if you are flying into UK, and bring the items out with you; not sure how third party could get he VAT back for you.  It is my understanding that you pay the VAT in the UK and have to claim it back from customs on departure with the items.  They will put it back on a credit card for you or into a bank acct.
