What's the basic difference between the 1000HD and the 3000SE series of the Incra mitre gauges?  Is it just the greater length and greater number of indexed angles on the 3000 (every .5 degrees as opposed to 1 degree)?  Otherwise, all the extrusions and the flip stop assembly seem to be the same.

I'm just trying to decide whether to take advantage of the sale on the 1000HD currently through Woodpeckers.

Ed,

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but Fine Woodworking did a comparison of high end miter gauges a couple of years ago and, if I remember correctly, I believe the JDS Accu-Miter was the clear winner. If you're considering a new miter gauge, you might want to try to find that review. Nothing against Incra ( I have several of their rulers & an Incra Jig), just adding some information to the discussion.

[member=37411]Edward A Reno III[/member]  Not sure what you're looking for in a miter gauge, but the lower end miter gauges might work just as well, adding your own wooden fence (maybe with a track) and other types of stops. The V120 with 120 notches for angles in 1 degree increments is a great miter gauge. Plus, I don't remember what kind of table saw you have but, if it's a Sawstop, I would suggest that you might not want an aluminum fence. Don't ask why I would suggest a wood fence instead, but I just would. (Might not apply to you though, but even if you don't have a Sawstop there is always a chance you'll run your blade into the fence I think.) Anyway the V120 is a great miter gauge; very accurate and, since I don't have a need for anymore precision than 1 degree increments (plus the stops at 22.5 degrees), it works great and is only $85; sometimes a little cheaper depending on where you buy it. Just a suggestion to save some money.

I wonder, given that you have a Kapex, that you need a really good miter gauge for your table saw. I found out of the box my kapex and 1000HD to be roughly equal in accuracy. The width of cut is comparable (12" for the Kapex and roughly 14"  for the miter gauge in normal position) and I far prefer cross cutting boards on the miter saw.
The other options would be a sled (commercial like the Dubby, Incra's or homemade), or sliding crosscut table.

Yeah, normally the Kapex, MFT or router table would suffice, but I've got a project coming up where I have to use the dado stack on the table saw to batch out some pieces that would be hard to cut accurately with another method.

Thanks for the replies.

I am not surprised that a Fine Woodworking comparison would come to that result.  I remember a few years ago they rated the Festool dust extractors very low also.

I owned a JDS Accu-Miter. In my opinion it was just above a stock table saw  miter gauge. It was not even in the same ball park as the Incra miter gauges.

I have a Incra 3000 & 1000HD. The total length of the miter bar on the 3000 is longer, but the length that is out past the fence is about the same. The extra miter bar length on the 3000 is all behind the fence because of all of the extra adjustments for setting angles. The 1000 is simpler when setting angles.

I have both the JDS and Incra miter gauges. Both are excellent. I think the JDS unit is sturdier and has better adjustments especially with the flip stop. I do a lot of high precision work and can't see any differences between the two units in terms of accuracy.

Just as another point of reference, I have the Kreg miter guage and while the guage itself is very accurat, the aluminum fence has some flex to it. So, I have some reservations about aluminum fences, and I'm guessing the longer they are, the more flex they'll have.

Having the JDS gauge, I can't imaging how much force it would take to flex its fence even a hair. Darn solid!
