Has anyone tried the new iNoxCase from Columbia River Knife & Tool?

They look pretty cool and possibly a useful tool for someone that uses tools and an iPhone. I am thinking about adding them to my offerings but would like some feedback from those of you that might have tried them.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,

It looks really cool, reminds me of that Star Trek communicator thing, but the two reasons why I wouldn't buy it are the cover would be in the way of me using the iPhone as a GPS in the mount while driving and there's no protection from moisture/rain/spills/dust/dirt getting into the openings of the phone.

Thanks, Ken, that's exactly the sort of response I was hoping to get.

I'm not really fond of flip-phones myself and that was my biggest reservation.

These guys are located less than two miles from my home, so maybe I should drive over there and take a look at their wares.

Looks sweet but is impractical. Metal is not going to provide any shock protection. There are much better options out there.

This is a trip report from visiting CRKT and playing with their iNoxCase.

I visited the manufacturer today and got to play with the CRKT case.  I don’t own an iPhone and they had a soft cardboard mockup for testing the case.  I have no interest in the company or their products but do live in the same small city in Oregon where they are located and manufacture.

The case is thin brushed stainless steel, not aluminum like some others and appears quite rugged.  The case won’t bend or break.  Unlike others which are rounded to match the design of the phone, this one is industrial looking, in a classy modern way and has numerous exposed “rivets”.  It has a nice hi-tech look that would befit a craftsman using state-of-the-art power tools.

It comes with a clear plastic overlay to keep the front of the phone from getting scratched and has openings for accessing all ports and buttons and seeing the clock with the lid closed.  The flip front protects the glass from breaking.  The back of the case is mostly open with a large “X” shaped stainless steel support.  The Apple logo and camera lens show through the rear openings.

I can’t guess if there is any impact protection if the phone is dropped, but it looks like the case will largely keep the phone from getting scratched, crushed or broken by things that touch, scrape or bang in to it.  I can’t conceive of the phone getting crushed if the case winds up under your tools in the tool bag.

The case looks a lot thinner and nicer in person than on their online datasheet, but it is industrial looking, not stylishly rounded or contoured.

The flip face works effortlessly and the case appears to be well made in a quality fashion, as one might expect from a top of the line knife company.  Your impression of this iPhone case could possibly be much different from mine.

Thanks for making the effort, Gary!

I guess I'll bring some in and see what I think of them. I use an Android but I have several friends with iPhones, so I can realistically test them. My understanding is that they are designed to protect the phone if dropped.

this looks weird, if only there was some soft plastic between the phone and case it would really protect IMO.
The metal will just transfer all the shocks to the phone. On top of that it adds weight and doesn't absorb shocks like the original plastic body, makes me think it could get the phone damaged even faster.
Not to mention the fact that metal bounces the radio waves and your phone will need to increase it's signal power to get through, and when using it the open surface would be directed towards you, so will all the harmful waves  [scared]  .

I have always had these nokia sport/work phones with a shock absorbing case, you could really smack the phone against a wall, leave it in the rain or take a call in the shower. Not worry about dust or anything. Untill my last one had an electronic problem and since then i am done with expensive phones and use one i got for free.
