This is a trip report from visiting CRKT and playing with their iNoxCase.
I visited the manufacturer today and got to play with the CRKT case. I don’t own an iPhone and they had a soft cardboard mockup for testing the case. I have no interest in the company or their products but do live in the same small city in Oregon where they are located and manufacture.
The case is thin brushed stainless steel, not aluminum like some others and appears quite rugged. The case won’t bend or break. Unlike others which are rounded to match the design of the phone, this one is industrial looking, in a classy modern way and has numerous exposed “rivets”. It has a nice hi-tech look that would befit a craftsman using state-of-the-art power tools.
It comes with a clear plastic overlay to keep the front of the phone from getting scratched and has openings for accessing all ports and buttons and seeing the clock with the lid closed. The flip front protects the glass from breaking. The back of the case is mostly open with a large “X” shaped stainless steel support. The Apple logo and camera lens show through the rear openings.
I can’t guess if there is any impact protection if the phone is dropped, but it looks like the case will largely keep the phone from getting scratched, crushed or broken by things that touch, scrape or bang in to it. I can’t conceive of the phone getting crushed if the case winds up under your tools in the tool bag.
The case looks a lot thinner and nicer in person than on their online datasheet, but it is industrial looking, not stylishly rounded or contoured.
The flip face works effortlessly and the case appears to be well made in a quality fashion, as one might expect from a top of the line knife company. Your impression of this iPhone case could possibly be much different from mine.
