Irfanview for Handling Photos

Everyone,
Attaching photos to messages is one of the main reasons I made the move to SMF.

Some people have been asking questions about how best to handle photos that you want to post to the group.  Well, for a few years now, I've been using a very simple, but very effective, little program called Irfanview.  This program is great for quickly opening photos, resizing, cropping, and re-sampling.  It does batch processing easily.  It's really easy to use.

Also, it runs on almost no system memory, it opens quickly...

And it's free!!

Here's a link to download it: Get Irfanview Here

Hi.  For many people, IrfanView will be just the ticket.  Others may prefer something else - like PhotoShop or PhotoShop Elements.  IrfanView is free; PhotoShop costs money.  To help both groups, I'll repeat the instructions twice - once for PhotoShop Elements and once for IrfanView.

I'm installing IrfanView now.  One caveat is that the installation installs Google Toobar and Google Desktop Search by default.  These are good tools, but I've seen conflicts with other software.

If you want to install these Google Utilities leave it as is.  If you do NOT want to install them, uncheck them on the fourth page

Thanks for mentioning that.  Personally, I never install Google Desktop Search.  The nice thing is, the Irfanview installation makes it very easy to choose not to install the Google stuff.

I should note here that Irfanview is great for simple processes -- viewing photos, resizing, cropping, resampling -- but if you want to do advanced photo-editing, get something like PhotoShop.  Most of the time, I find Irfanview is just what I need, especially for posting to groups.  Because it's so simple, I find myself using it more often than PhotoShop!

Thanks again for all your help,
Matthew

A couple questions about Irfanview;

Do you know if it works with Macs?

How large is the download?  Most of the time I'm on a 26k dial up....  :-[
