iron on edge banding

this is really a question to carpenters / bench joiners

ive 100m (approx 330 feet) of beech edge banding to do what sort of time should i allow.

im using an iron not a banding machine.

i normally only do a few metres at a time, with this quantity i need to be a bit more accurate

as its timber edging ill use the OFK 700, edge strippers only seem to work well on plastic edging

ps eli im not sure about the english or the spelling

Hey dd, I can't help you with yur question, but i do enjoy your posts. your typing, capitalizing, puntuation, spellin, etc is almost as bad as mine.  keep up th good wrk

  Seems like you would just take the time you would normally take for doing X meters and multiply?

      Also just a note on edge banding in general.  I just used the Fast Cap - Fast Edge on a couple simple bookcases the other day. It is a peel and stick with acrylic based adhesive.  I like it a lot.  Nice quality appearance to the wood. The little finger joints don't show as much as with other brands I have used.  It is much more expensive than iron on. But it is also much faster. And not having to do the ironing is a great time and frustration saver for me.  Plus it is not suseptable to water base stains loosening the glue!

dd, When i first met my wife, she had only been in this country for 7 years and had only lived with German families.  When i had met her, she had just been back to Germany for a few months and decided this was the country for her to be.  She had been back here for only a couple of months when she met up with this dirty, dingy, grubby and bearded mason who she thought was a hippy.

We went out on a date (that simply never ended) and when she spoke to me, I could not undrstand what she was saying.  I would ask her to repeat a little more slowly. she would , but with an effort to speak perfectly.  Tat just made it worse and I would tell her to relax and try again.  After several attempt to say in English and screwing it up worse with each attempt, I would finally tell her to just relax and say it in German.

German has enough of the English (to be more exact, English has a lot of the German) in it that i could pick out enough of what she was saying that I could figure out the subject matter and we could take it from there.

The only problem was that I learned to say "ya" before I learned to say"nine"  Now, some 40 plus years later, i am still saying "YA!"  :

Hey DD,
Can you have a local cab shop edge it or buy your stock edged? I've done this to make a build more efficient. Are you using a household iron or a banding iron? I find a house iron a lot faster. I haven't done that much at one go, so I couldn't guess how long it'll take you. That's like how long is string? I'd bet you're faster than me though.

eli thanks for the idea, joinery shops think they have a god given right to print money, i aint paying them 42 quid an hour to edge band when the ones i know dont have edge banders

i went with gut instinct on the edging. i'll find out if i was right if i get the job

i only use joinery shops for more complicated items like multi pane sashes because i can make single pane sashes on site with an OF1400 and a Domino

you reminded me that i hadnt thought of a solution that lay outside my own ability, so your comment was a good kick in the arse

it just so happens in this case that i know none of my local joinery shops have this tooling

why they dont it is a mystery to me

Don't know if your project justifies the investment, but Rockler sells a small hot air edge banding machine for $260.00
I use one myself in the shop, it's much faster than an iron.
