Is there a how to guide for settings on miter cuts?

I’m sorry if this is something that has been covered over and over but I cannot find the answer. I am making a skirt for a dining table and am trying to use my new domino 700 to make the cuts. This is only my second time using it so I still have no idea what I am doing with this machine.

The work piece is 2” wide, and 13/16” thick. The one tutorial I found for this size said to use the 8mm cutter and 40mm dominos, and the stop block at 10mm down . So I set the domino to 45 degrees, 10mm down, and 20mm deep cut... and cut all the way through the piece. So is there a guide for the settings? What did I do wrong here?

Mine is a DF500 but the principle should be the same.

Based on your photo, the 10mm fence height was set too deep. Lower the fence by 2 to 4mm to cut the mortise closer to the inside edge/corner. (I don't have an exact figure as I can't tell from the picture how far that milled mortise is from the inside edge).  You can actually check if the fence setting is correct or not by plunging the cutter on the side of the work -- without turning on the power (unplugged the machine first).

Don't throw away that miscut piece. Here's how to fix it:

- Glue and plug the mortise with a 8mm domino (about 18mm long) from the inside
- Reset the fence and cut the new mortise close to the inside corner (see image -- black line)
- Cover the void on the show face with a wood patch (more work but better result if done right) or filler (less work but acceptable result)

    Have you downloaded the supplemental manual from Rick Christopherson's website waterfront-woods.com/festool? He covers this on page 14 of the Domino 700 supplemental manual. You must calculate the plunge depth precisely and move your plunge cut as close to the inside of your mitered piece as possible. The 8mm dominos come in both 40mm and 50mm lengths and that means your plunge on each side is 20mm or 25mm. FWIW, my first miter joint I plunged through the material but it was only a demo so other than embarrassing me, no harm done. In any case, the 700 may be overkill for this application. I'd probably be using 5mm or 6mm dominos in this case. However, if you don't have a D500, you can use the 8mm dominos but you have to be careful and for really thin stock, you might even have to shorten the domino, which RC talks about on page 18. Hope this helps...
