I can confirm, it is totally awesome! There were a few guys at the Festool end-user class in April that got to use one.

Hey, Laurie (Hasslefactor) got to use one, and her name isn't Rick. (Granted, her friend's name was Rick....hmmm?)

Actually, I absolutely love it. I have a video coming out (thanks to Laurie) that also includes several shots with the VacSys. The articulated head is just to die for.

Would that video also include a few shots of the Multi-position Guide Stops???  [smile]

Brian demonstrated it for us at Lebanon training and it is awesome!  It actually has enough vacuum to stick objects to a piece of MDF that is held by the machine.  I never realized how porous MDF was.  (So much for the MDF boat idea.  [scared])  It will be the ultimate bench vise if it is released, but we don't know when.

The UL must be afraid we will get our faces stuck to the vacuum pump.  [big grin]

They may be more concerned about us turning our backs to it.  Might put Fleet's out of business.

[eek]

Alex,

That's how a lot of the big CNC router beds are.  You put down a sacrificial piece of MDF and then lay your melamine sheet etc. on that.  Your parts will all stay in place as they are cut.  Of course good software will do a pass cuting off the last couple thousandths so that the material isn't under any side load stress that might cause it to move.

Yep, that's right. I got to use the VacSys. Woo hoo!!!!  (Thanks, Rick!  :-* )

You're right, Tom -- it IS totally awesome.
No wait.... that's not quite accurate.
Actually, it's totally FREAKING awesome.

And yes, Ron, the video will show how to set up and use Rick's Multi-position Guide Stop. In detail.
But I'm thinking that what you REALLY want to know is the status.  [wink]
Well, the rough cut is done.... Rick's busy making notes on it....
And I'm just editing away like a champ (thanks to my excellent tutor, the Skipper).
Should be done reasonably soon.
I hope.  [big grin]

Thanks Laurie.  Be sure to have Rick include some clever tips & tricks for users.

I'm just hopefull I can get the unit seperate from the vacuum pump.  I alread have one and would only want the rest of it.

The Festool vaccum pump is very quiet.  You might want to put your old one on eBay and upgrade.  [big grin]

I built this one from a kit (from Joe woodworker.com)with a gast pump I bought at an auction for 5 bucks when my previous employer went out of business.  she's quiet as a church mouse and works great.

You will probably be in luck.  If you notice in the video in your opening post, at 1:18 they show that an extension unit is available.  You may even want two...

Corwin, I believe you're right. I'm pretty sure the vac is sold as a set and individually. Maybe someone over seas can confirm this?

This will almost certainly change how work benches with vises are built.  A quantum leap?
