In this video, I start making a James Krenov inspired case. The pieces for the base came from a single piece of 8/4 walnut. I cut the parts and join everything with the Festool Domino and a few dowels.

This project is coming along! In this video, I start making the cabinet from hard maple from the base up. Of course, all the joinery for the cabinet is held together with dominos. I then route the back of the cabinet to accept the solid maple panel back.

After dry fitting the case together, I start making the frame and panel solid maple back. All the measurements are taken directly off the case.

It’s time to make the doors! There is a lot of layout due to the complexity of the different sizes for the rails and stiles and the bridle joints. I then glue up the panels with the book matched crotch maple panels. It was a lot of work, but the end result is beautiful!

In this video, I cut in the mortises for the knife hinges in the bottom and top of the case. Then perform the final glue up of the cabinet. I also make a very big mistake along the way can you guess what it is?

If you have any questions, please let me know, as I would love to hear from you.

Well it’s time to finally hang the doors on the cabinet. I trim the door to fit opening, and cut the mortises in the bottom of the doors for the knife hinges. The mistake of not bringing the hinges up 5/16” from the case has not prevented me from hanging the doors correctly. I’m hoping that only the trained eye will find my mistake!

Just a quick video showing how I put the finish on the piece. I start by using boiled linseed oil, move on to spraying two coats of shellac with an HVLP gun, and finish by adding a layer of wax. It came out wonderful!

In the final video of this build, I make the post and bail pulls for the doors. I do something a little different for the door catches, and finally attach the cabinet to the base. This was a fun project to make!

Nice job Guy, I have always been inspired by the designs of James Krenov and I'm glad to see other woodworkers follow the craft.

Thanks guys. I have the top case and back done now. Will be working on the pre-finish and the doors hopefully this weekend. Just need to get some knife hinges before I do the glue up.

Looks very nice. You did a good job with the video, explanations and the actual piece. I can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks for all the positive responses. I hope to have the construction done this weekend, and then start the finishing process. I am also going to try to edit another video this weekend. No rest for the weary!

Hello Guy,

Very nice work!

Did you by chance take any courses at Rosewood Studio or Inside Passage? Your work reminds me of some to the stuff I learned there. You are doing a fine job!

Mike

Thanks Mike. Unfortunately the only class I ever took was 8th grade wood shop with Mr. Crutchfield. Man, that seems a like a long time ago. Caught the bug and have been making sawdust since then.

Hi Guy,

Ok, I'll bite - You do very nice work, I am sure JK would be proud!

I have a couple comments. I would put a darker wood on the top, the same as your door panels, but with a quarter cut grain or something simple. I would also put a wider apron on the top with a nice broad curve. I think this would need to be done with a convex spokeshave, I have not tried with with a router. In my experience, its faster by hand.

Cheers, Mike

Those are some very good ideas Mike. The original thought I had was in fact to arch or bow the bottom rails. I decided against it as I wanted to keep a clean angular look to the piece. Making the top out of walnut like the base had never dawned on me however. It would have been a great way to balance out the contrasting wood selection.

Nice work on fitting the doors.

I missed 'the mistake' you mentioned in the earlier videos.  What was it and how did you over come it?

Thanks for the step-by-step!

neil

Thanks Neil. The  mistake was that I only brought the hinge 1/16" off the cabinet side instead of 5/16". The end result was the hinge is not centered in the 3/4" thickness of the door. I never even noticed it until I was ready to hang the doors. Live and Learn!
