Hello Everyone,
We're off to a new year, and a new contest.  Even more than that, it's a whole new contest concept!

The sponsor this month is Bill in Seattle a dealer who owns Festool Supply.

This will be the first contest that involves the international community, not just members in the United States.

Below is a description of how this contest will work.  I've put quotes from Bill himself in key spots.

The Prize
$350 Towards Festool tools or accessories AND a limited special-edition Festool Supply NW hat and T-shirt.

Contest Theme
Member Projects.

Entering the Contest
Any project posted in the "Member Projects" board is eligible for consideration.  You do not have to specifically "enter" it.  However, to be eligible, the project must only be posted in the Festool Owners Group, and the contestant must have been active (posting) in the FOG within the past six months.

From Bill: "Any project can be entered even if it is still being worked on as some people worldwide who just found the FOG and have no post to date now have motive to enter. I see there are many projects underway that people post updates.  Show a simple picture or pictures and explain or show that Festool tools made a difference along the way in the project.  The project does not matter, it will be the thought process that will make members take the plunge as hopefully they will see everyone has a chance to win.  A simple picture is all that's required as long as its viewable and won't limit the keyboard challenged.  Even people who are not great at grammar and typing will have a chance if they enter."

For this contest, we'd like to see more about you, as well as the project itself.  From Bill: "I think that part of the entry should include a brief statistic on the user. It should include, age group, people don't have to give away their true one, like 18-25 25-35 35-45 45-55, type of worker, what people consider themselves: novice, intermediate, hobbiest, professional, or well varnished (humor).  And mostly, include YOUR COUNTRY."

Judging
Bill has asked that the international community vote on their favorite projects.  You can do that by reviewing all the projects posted in the "Member projects" board and then posting a nomination of that project here in this discussion.

I will create a poll in this discussion containing all the nominees.  Everyone can use the poll to vote anonymously for their favorite project.  Members will be able to change their vote, but can only vote for one project at any time.

At the end of the month, Bill will choose a winner, in a random drawing, from the top 10 nominations.  Of course, there is no guarantee which projects will end up in that final 10.  As Bill said, "There will be so many great projects that I felt it only fair to draw random for the final, and it should be a honour to make it to the top ten of the world.  I can only hope that there will be other country's entries in the final 10.  This should make the contest equal for any country to win."

Important Notes
Because this is an international contest, we are opening up a more exciting opportunities.  However, it also makes things more complicated.  Bill has thought this through, and here is his plan: "The prize will be $350 US or equivalent in whatever country's monetary equivalent if the winner is not from the US.  If from the, US I will redeem the prize through  Festool Supply NW.  If a winner from another country wins, stuff cost more everywhere else and by applying direct money to them it offsets the cost difference here and helps to make the prize equal to all countries.  The winner, if not from The US will only have to buy tools or accessories at his local dealer so that there will be no voltage problems or warranty issues. The winner only needs to contact me as to where he is going to buy the prize and I will contact the dealer and make arrangements as for the monetary prize  payment of the goods. This way there should be no conflict as to people buying outside their country and getting dealers in trouble for brand equity violations."

If you have any questions, please post them here.  Otherwise, everyone, please head on over to the "Member Projects" area and begin nominating your favorite projects for this contest!  Remember to post your nominations here.

This is an exciting new idea for the FOG, and I hope it gets more people involved.

Thank you to Bill for spending so much time working on this concept, and for providing the prize for this month's contest.

Stay in touch,
Matthew

I think they will be excited they are included irrelevant of the prize.

Hey, the contest was already a little bit  international.

I like the idea of nominations from members followed by a vote from members to choose the top 10.  I am sure that this will generate more interest.  Last year we did something similar on the Canadian woodworking forum.

Good Morning,
Thanks to Dave, nickao, and Frank for endorsing the contest early on!

OK, how about nominating a project or two, so we can get things rolling?  Just pick a couple of your favorite projects from the Member Projects board and post them here.

I've created the poll, but we need a couple of nominations so people can start voting.

Remember, the projects can be from as far back in time as you want to go.

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Steve,

Thanks for a "vote" for my Entertainment Center project.

Matthew,

What is the purpose of the vote box at the top of this month's contest string?  I do not understand how a "yes" or "no" vote makes any sense.

If I undersatnd correctly, it's not a yes/no vote.  People vote for their favorite project.  Top 10 go into a random drawing.  One winner selected at random.  I'm not sure I agree about top 10 though.  If there aren't a lot of votes someone who rec'd 50 votes could lose to someone who received 5 votes.  Guess that's the random part of it.  There should be a minimum number of required votes, some % of the total.

I am confused.  Is the nominations for the December or January project here?

This is the January contest.  The December contest ended a couple of days ago.

I had those in there as place holders until we got some nominations!

As we get more projects nominated for the contest, the list of projects on the poll will grow.  Just vote for the one you like best.  Of all the nominations, the top 10 will be entered in the random drawing.  The top 10 will be determined by percentage of the total vote.

Hope these answers help!

Keep the nominations coming.

Thanks,
Matthew

Good Afternoon,
We need some more nominations!

If you think a project should be considered in this month's contest, just say so here.

Please nominate projects here, rather than doing it offline in a PM.

Thanks,
Matthew

Here are some of mine.http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=5888.0 I know he had a problem with this, and still the out come was awesome. These jewelry boxes too look greathttp://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=5883.0 . Here is another great project http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=5872.0 I really love the finished look on these. If I was to ever build my own home, This would be the look I would want (doubt I could achieve it though.) I liked to see this build up too. To see it from sketch up, through the build, to a built unit was great, also love the two toned effecthttp://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=5006.0 . I actually liked the end result of this cabinet, though he takes about as good of pictures as I dohttp://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=5789.0 I also like this one, I think they turned out great, and after building some boxes for a friend, It got me interested in building my own somedayhttp://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=5322.0 . While I'm on speaker subject, this project turned out awesome, I'd like to see some build projects, but that might give away trade secretshttp://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=4172.0 . Here is someone that does great work, but hardly posts it.http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=3715.0  I post anything, and everything. I like the fact that copper veneer was on the top of this one.http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=3756.0 I am giving it a try veneering it in my bathroom vanity.  This one illustrates a good project using the Domino.http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=2154.0 Once again someone who rarely posts pictures of woodworking projects, but I like the look of the padauk wood.\

I think all the projects are great. I spent alot of time going through them, and I nominated projects that appealed to me for one reason or another. I tried to list a brief reason why they appealed to me. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Good Afternoon,
Thank you Robert and Stoolman for adding a few more nominees to the list!  The projects are listed in the order in which they were nominated.  I figure that's a fair and relatively random way for them to make their appearance.

The only one that is ineligible is this one!  But thanks for the mention.

Since some members post several project discussions, I use the exact title of the project post in the poll.  That way, I can make sure we are communicating clearly and members can easily find the project(s) we're talking about.

I think we are starting to have a good list of projects.  You can change your vote at any time.

Keep the nominations coming, and remember to search back through FOG history to find good projects anywhere they are.

Thanks,
Matthew

I was waiting until after Bob got around to picking the winner of December's contest.  But I guess that I will go ahgead and nominate two projects for January.  They are:

Woodgeek?s Dinnerware Hutchhttp://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=5006.0

Jay StPeter?s Garden Benchhttp://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=5830.0

Frank,

I apologize for the delay in making a choice, but will make a decision this week.
Apologize to Bill for intruding into his "area".

Bob

Matthew, don't forget to remove Dave Ronayk's project now that is has won the December contest.  I assume that, having one once, a project is not eligible for another win.  If that is not the rule, it should be.

Guys thanks for putting me up there, but I really have no documentation or anything that comes close to what the contests here require to win.

I decided not to participate in the contests a long time ago.

But thanks again!

You might say that, but the BIG goal is not to exclude any person from any country anywhere, as it has been in the past. The gracious fellow users out of this country have gifted us with much goodwill and its only right to spread goodwill back across the big ponds all over.
