JET drum sander thoughts.....

BTW, on that African Mahogany, try a glue size (10 parts water to 1 part glue).  Just brush it on lightly and let it dry for half an hour then the material will machine much better, also will finish better.

Not sure about that, im sure it would help with machining but how long will the planer blades actually last having to cut through glue over the whole surface of a board.

I honestly would rather spend the extra time drum sanding with maybe a 40 grit to prevent tear out, I spend about the same amount of time sitting and filling in all the little holes.....and then having to touch up the holes i miss after I have added stain or finish.

One thing im really looking forward to with the drum sander is sanding down the thin frames i use on my display cabinets instead of rounding off all the crisp edges with a orbital sander.

Three weeks ago, the shaft key between the drive motor and the coupling to the drum fell out. One of the screws holding the key in place dropped out, and the other snapped. The special screws for holding the key to the shaft were out of stock! So, I am still waiting for the parts required to get back up and running. Other screws, holding inserts to the coupling were also loose, and one dropped out.

I was told by the local service tech that this is NOT a common problem, and that this is a very well performing machine. Warrantee service will be making the repair when the replacement parts finally become available. I can't commend Jet on speedy resolution of this problem.

A quick search got me to this thread, i bought the 22-44 osc about 4 months ago and liked it but i think i have the same problem. About a month or two ago the part shown in the pic fell out between the engine and the drum. I inspected the whole machine and cannot find where it comes from, i even wasn't sure it came from the drum sander at all because it still worked normally.
But now since a week or two the sander has started to vibrate more than before and as soon as i start to sand the drum just stalls.
So my guessing is that the part connects the drum to the engine.
Was your problem fixed and can you give me more info on how?

I bought it from axminster UK, sent them a mail with the pic a week ago and got no response, sent it again two days ago and got a response the day after that the pic didn't come through arghhh!

Just a follow up on my problem, CharlesWilson has helped me through it in PM and i managed to fix it myself.
It was actually quite easy, for other who have the same problem and find this on a google search here is how i did it:

Remove the protector hood, remove the oscillating mechanism pulley and belt for easy access to the axle.
De tighten the 4 screws around the sort of sleeve that connects the axle between engine and drum, turn the sleeve so that the open slot is towards you and keep it in place while you turn the drum with your hand untill you see a groove appear where the missing part belongs, put the part back in and screw it back.

it actually took less than 10 minutes to repair, but because the sleeve wasn't aligned anymore i couldn't see the groove so i didn't know where the hell the missing part came from!
