I just read on SMC that John Lucas passed away. I only ever exchanged a couple of emails with John but the little contact I did have with him was extremely helpful.  His site has been a gold mine for a lot of aspiring woodworkers.  His presence will be missed.

OMG! That's terrible news. I was speaking with him a couple of months ago and he made up some DVD's for me. What a wonderful, giving person. This is a major loss. My condolances  to his family.

I am very sorry and sad.  John was a major influence on my decision to purchase Festool.

John's how-to examples, his product reviews, his advise, and his encouragement have been important to me over the last six years.  I will miss him.

Frank, he played a big role in my deciding to buy my first Festool tools too. I'll miss him and wish the best for his family in this sad time.

Many of us, including myself will miss his candid, down-to-earth posts here.

I have read - and - then gone back to study and utilize many of his methods for using Festool products.

I'm very sorry to hear this.   John and his lovely assistants provided me with an enormous amount of Festool information combined with humor in a clear format that helped me understand the significance of Festool tools.  Like Frank, John was the driving force that made me choose Festool.

Our world is a poorer place now.   But I know John will rest in peace with the knowledge that he has touched the lives of thousands of people and made their lives better.

Regards,

Dan.

John was a true inspiration to me.  My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Wow, I knew he had some health issues over the past few years but no idea things were that bad.  Terrible news, condolences to his family.

I can't count the hours I spent reading his site and learning from his experience.  He will be missed.  My condolences to his family & many friends.

Sorry to hear the news.  Really got a lot from his posts.  The guy knew how to enjoy woodworking and help others do the same.

What awful news! John was a wonderful man with a rare and wonderful gift.  He will be very much missed.

Fair Winds and God's Speed wherever you are John.

I enjoyed his site and learned a lot. He also inspired a lot of woodworkers to new levels he will be certainly missed.

Very sad news, but he lived a good life and a full life, and will be remembered for it.

'Onward, fair voyager.'

I exchanged a number of emails with John and spent many hours combing through his website. Both he and his website were providers of practical information and advice about tools and the real techniques of how to get the best from them.  Like with FOG and other similar groups the internet has enabled people all over the world to get together to share information and friendship. John was a leader in showing people alternative ways of doing something so that the reader could choose what was appropriate for them.

Many words in the English language are over-marketed or over used. However once in a while one can be applied in a respectful manner.

Guru:
From: dictionary.reference.com
an intellectual or spiritual guide or leader.
any person who counsels or advises; mentor.
a leader in a particular field.
An acknowledged and influential advocate, as of a movement or idea.

By extension, a ?guru? is a teacher who attracts disciples or followers.

John ...  Thank you.

I talked from time to time with him and always managed to have a smile during and after our talks. I thank him for the lingering grin that i have when i think about him now. [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]I will miss talking with him.

Wow - - - just wow. I was unaware of his medical issues.
John's web site was the real reason I got started with wood butchering. I bet I have a stack of at least 1000 pages printed from his web site for reference material. John provided so much information in a truly useful way to those needing assistance in procedures, tool selection, projects. I hope he realizes how many people he touched and influenced in his lifetime. This is truly sad.

It is indeed a sad day for all of us.  His wit and wisdom will be missed.  I wish his family and friends all the best wishes in his absence.

RIP indeed.
