Jointing with a festool router

I have successfully jointed large slabs with a router, most recently during the build of Maple Trestle Table.  A large diameter bit will help ensure a smooth cut.

Here is the resulting joint:

Even though the table top is solid wood, the size and weight of each slab (+70lbs) made it impractical to run over a jointer and the shape made it impossible.

You can do the same thing with a router set to the guide rail to make the mirror cut.

One side of the router bit will be climb-cutting.  Sometimes it'll be no big deal.  If you take enough time setting up, it'll almost never be unsafe.  Other times it may affect the quality of the cut on the side that's climb-cutting.  Other times it may cause an accident.  Rather than mirror cut with the router, I'd skim the edge of one piece face-up and the other face-down.  The great thing about the guide rails is that they're almost always dead straight, so the edges will mate well if you do it this way rather than mirror-routing.
