JULY 2008: PS 300 or PSB 300 Jigsaw

at present i cant narrow down to two projects, its three at the moment

and ive a 50th birthday party to attend this evening so thinking will be even more difficult later on

in no order

slb's cabinet                              ....................  damm fine work

poto's jig                                    ....................  accuracy and safety

Paul Franklin's systainer ports  ....................  all the elements of modern cabinet making

these are my selections

the final outcome will depend on the collective judges descision and may or may not include any of the above

dirtydeeds,
Thanks for posting your current favorites.  I know it's tough, because there are a lot of great projects.
After we hear from the other judges, I'll post a sort of score card.
Matthew

ive VERY reluctantly reduced my list to two

poto's jig and paul franklins systainer ports

the removal of slb's work (from MY list) has nothing whatsoever to do with my earlier comments on the hinging arangements

it really is stunning work and i would proudy have it in my own living room "as is" ............. i would not change slb's hinges

they do not in anyway detract from the piece

it was a matter of personal judgement

this does not mean that slb's work might not still be on other judges' lists

regardless of my current role as a judge, i am still human

so ill give my human reasons for keeping the remaining two

with my recent propensity to accidental self harm with power tools and stanley knives i view poto's jig as very important for safety

and it is to me a perfect example of the deep thinking needed to make a jig

jigs are temporary tools but they are also works of art in their own right

paul franklin's  systainer ports have remained because they remind me of old time masterpieces, where an apprentice shew his skills off to his peers

the object of the masterpiece was to show that he had thoroughly learned MANY skills and could combine all of them in a single piece

paul's work does just this

i would like to tell people how painfully difficult it was for me to drop slb's work in favour of paul's

im not a court of law judge

who can hand down sentances without the need for any explanation

judicial laywers are reuired to show no emotion and deal with the law in its purest form

therefore (in most cases) they are cold and devoid of humanity

im a carpenter and im human so i intend to explain why i chose paul's work over slb's

both pieces of work are good

wrong..................  they are NOT good

"good" is english understatement of exceptional work

they are both stunning in their own way

BOTH pieces show almost identical skills in a single piece, from design and cutting lists, all the way though to completion

in my current role, however, i still have to make judgement (that i have now found out is the HARDEST thing)

my thinking (which is ABSOLUTLY not open to outside questioning) is that

paul has taken as much pride in his "backroom work"

as he does in "front of shop"

dropping slb's cabinet was devastating (because im sure he has the same commitment as paul to his backroom work)

in publishing my reasons for my judegment

i am in no way intending to set a precedent

for either myself

OR

the other judges

and you must absolutly NOT expect reasons for the final judgement, that is for the judges alone

i am only one of a panel

per, your comment is kind

until now..............  i had never understood how difficult it was to be a judge

i now find it is a REAL responsibility........................ ouch

that responsibility is far more difficult than i had imagined

you have to supress youre own bias and predudice to the extent it doesnt exist

or at least minimise it so your judgement is as clear as possible

thanks for your thoughts

dd

DD, you're doing a fine job. It does have to come down to one. Getting there is the hard part, especially with the talent around here. I don't envy your task.  :) Good luck to everyone.

ive made a personal descision to give an order of precedent to my last two choices

poto's jig is first in my eyes

paul's systainer ports are my second choice

being one of a panel means that my personal descison is TOTALLY irrellevant to both me and the rest of the judges

i will champion both pieces equally with the other judges because both are worthy of winning (it will not be biased towards poto's work)

it does not mean to say that in the final discussions with the other judges that i will not change my view

nor does it mean at the final vote that i will choose either one of these two pieces

there will be no explanation as to why i have chosen in this case to give my choices an order of choice

nor does it set a precedent for me or any of the judges

however be assured it was not done on the flip of a coin

this descison was far too important to entrust the outcome to a game of chance

dirtydeeds,
I'm glad we invited you as a judge!  You are bringing just the kind of excitement to this contest we all need.
Also, when we choose a winner this month, that person will know the prize was well-earned.
Matthew

If Dirtydeeds is prepared to accept the difficult job for longer than the original month (I know he's not enjoying all aspects of the responsibility), I'd like propose him for lifetime judgeship in recognition of the outstanding job he's doing bringing integrity, entertainment, and involvement to a process that's normally mostly hidden from view for the rest of us.

And no, that's not a deliberate suck-up because I have intentionally avoided posting any potential entries in the competition. (and every regular should know by now that impressing others with my friendly nature is not part of my agenda).

Steve

steve jones is kind and he is right, i find the job of being a judge very difficult

i am not prepared to be a judge for life, that would be far too much responsibility

HOWEVER

if i have 4 positive sponsers OUTSIDE the existing quoram and existing appovers, i will take it on for a second month

be aware this will only happen IF  the forum positivly requests it

i will not be a TOKEN limey

sorry guys, but its simple

"sort it" and i'll do the job for a second month, i find it difficult

or you can sod off

i will not back out of my current commitment to see the july competition to the end
