Just a little bowl project.

This was a chunk of Red Gum that I had started turning a while back. I broke it off the lathe so I used it as |A cigar ash tray for about a year. The other day I decided to clean it up into a better ash tray. Once the LOMl saw it, that plan was axed. She has taken over ownership now. The only Festool I used on it was my DX-93 E sander. I kind of like the POS now.

Wow that's come up beautifully Bill. What did you use for a finish? Besides ashes I mean. ;D

I love tung oil. I use it on everything. The trick to tung oil is to wait 24 hours between coats and do at least 4 coats. It'll look crappy at first but will really look great in the end.

Do you guys get Organoil there? It's an organic (you can use it on food surfaces with no worries) cold pressed tung oil with no driers. They mostly market it to turners and they have a hard burnishing oil that's really fantastic.

I do have some orange oil. It looks good but it doesn't build up like tung oil. I tried some burnishing oil, it's actually shellac and one drop of water and you've got problems. If I want a high gloss I use laquer. I've just had really good results with tung oil. Thanks for the advice though. I might give the orange oil a try again.

nono, not orange oil. OR-GAN-OIL. It's the product name, it IS tung oil. Which I guess you don't have it.

Organoil The amazing thing is this stuff NEVER solidifies in the can, even if you leave the top off. Only the heat of sanding or burnishing seals it. Smells awesome too. Don't need a mask, no VOCs

Oops sorry. I use Minwax. It's about 45% tung oil and other ingredients. I'll check to see if I can find organ oil. I'm always willing to try a different brand.
