Kapex Base Casting

My kapex makes accurate cuts every day on site with no dust, this is why I bought it. I have never looked at/noticed the castings.

+1

Except my Kapex does not go on site.  It sits in my garage, as a hobbyist,  which at the present time is a cool 28 degrees because of the deep freeze we are going through.

Many seem to think that it is just a tool what is the difference how the finish quality looks?  $1400 for what has been proclaimed as the finish miter saw in the world, and Festool German engineering and manufacturing, you have to be kidding.

No excuses here, this poor quality finish is unacceptable on any saw, let alone one that cost 3 times what many of the competition cost.

Having owned many other Festool tools over the past 10 years, and I am shocked and disappointed that a company with the reputation of Festool would put out a product like this and just tell consumers it doesn't effect the performance of the saw...

I can't recall reading anything in Festool literature where they proclaimed their products/tools to be flawless pieces of art.  Tools yes, art no.  Bottom line is......the Kapex IS a tool.  A tool that can help YOU make a piece of art.  If you have the skills.....good tools help!

Claiming to have a miter saw engineered to be the best, perform the best, doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with being aesthetically pleasing to the eye.  A gouge in the table, warped fence, unlevel surface, sure, not acceptable.  These small casting marks, you almost have to go looking for them.  I had my Kapex for three weeks, checked it out to ensure the fence and tables were straight, it cut accurately, never crossed my mind to examine for casting marks.

When I read these types of threads, it makes me wonder if the users will be using this saw on a miter stand or build a miter saw station for it, or placing it on a nice table in the living room to view as a piece of artwork?

Bottom line......it is a tool, use it, scratch it up, ding it, cut some wood on it, enjoy it!  If the cosmetics are that shocking and disappointing, you always have the option of returning it for a full refund and buying that cheaper miter saw, which while looking rather sharp probably won't perform at the level of the Kapex.....

Thank you sir.  I never bought a tool that would sit on a pedestal.  I use them.  I do not own a Kapex at this point, but am doubtful that I will examine it to the point that it should be a "mona lisa" or a "david", since my work is not to the point of a Michalangeo!

If the base casting mold features are the only thing wrong with the Kapex, then it's a great saw since you can find a shopping list of issues with any other miter saw on the market today.

Seems to be a large portion of the festool purchasing population purchases tools just to say they have them.

It really is weird. I get liking nice tools. Most men and especially tradesmen do. But collecting tools that never get used that is just odd. I can think of many much more exciting ways to spend my money. Being i use my tools spending money on them can at times be exciting. Sometimes not though like when something breaks gets lost or stolen on a job sight and needs to be replaced immediately. Tool replacment stinks as apposed to tool addition.

I really get the impression here some people buy the tools for the wrong reasons.

Wrong reasons for some , right reasons for others.

Not so sure why this topic and concept bothers everyone so much that it needs to be a bash fest on both sides.

Well it sure has made me critical of the welds on my sprayer carts and skids.  [scared]  [big grin]

Like Seth said, each of us has a different opinion of what "acceptable" means. While some might think the aesthetics matter, others could care less. There's no right or wrong. Having a premium product means more scrutiny, it just comes with the territory.

But, the castings are what they are and they are going to be similar on every Kapex because of the processes.

Fortunately, we do offer a 30-day no-hassle money back guarantee for instances like this where someone is not satisfied to exchange or get a refund on a tool.

My 2 cents is that if Festool is going to spend more money building this tool that money should go into something that improves the functioning or utility of the tool. Not polishing the casting.

Beefier windings. Better dust collection. Brighter lasers. Yes.

Shiny metal. No.

I was using my Domino today and for the first time in seven years, I noticed that the casting on the base section was not perfect [eek].  Several thousand Domino joints completed with a "not-perfect" casting si I guess I'll keep it and try to avoid looking at that imperfection [wink]

Guys. Please stop. If some people care about the quality of their castings but you don't, let it go.

Future posts that are not helpful and just aim to belittle others on this forum will be deleted from this thread.

Thank you.
