I want to cut mitered ends on my drawers, they are about 5inches high. The guard is still covering the blade before it can start to cut. There something I can do to retract the guard without removing it for these cuts?  thanks

Try the "Special cutting position"...even then 5" might be beyond the capacity of the saw...that is why I got the Makita 1019 instead

Kapex specs state that capacity is 4.75" in special position....cut while the parts are laying flat

Correct. 120mm is the max. cutting height at the special cutting position.

Holding the guard slightly up is pretty simple since the guard has square holes for tying, but I don't think it's a safe practice or advisable to start the saw with the guard up and the blade exposed.

In a mock-up (with the boot removed for illustration) shown below, I was able to position the saw in the normal manner (without raising the guard beforehand) for a chopping (not sliding) cut on a 5" wide stock:

Maybe your stock is a lot wider than 5"?
