Silly question, but how large is the carton for the Kapex. I don't know if I need to have it delivered or if I can get it into my car.

Not as big as other saws..But...I took mine out of the box and put it in trunk broke the box down and was done. Depends on your vehicle..If I drove my minivan (can't believe I just admitted that) I would have fit no problem. The saw is small, and light and the box is commensurate.

Dimensions for the carton?

I don't have that, Festool would though or maybe Shane can chime..Do you need to wrap it or something?

the box is 20 inches high.  23 inches deep and 29 1/2 long.

I have my box in the basement just in case I need it.  [wink]

Hummm.... with the price of gas, round trip California to Atlanta, motels, junk food stops.... Might make more sense to shell out the money and buy one yourself.

Seriously, I'm having a devil of a time trying to justify the Kapex. I do mostly small stuff. The main attraction is the ability to do miters and bevels without having to make jigs. Not sure how well the Kapex would do on small box cuts.

That is the wonderful part of the 30 day return policy.  You can prepare your stock, made prototypes, etc., and get ready and then you can put your Kapex thru the paces and procedures that matter to YOU.

The genius of the 30 day policy is you WON'T return it after you try it out..Genius for Festool anyway.

OP-you have to do what is right for you. I struggled with this and decided to stretch myself a little. Yes, it's hard to justify the price for me too, since I do mainly DIY/Homeowner (on an advanced level) projects. And I can't honestly tell you here and in my view, even while owning the Kapex, it's not worth the price they charge-honestly. Problem as I see it with the Kapex is there isn't ANY real competition to it. Once there is, maybe the price will come down, maybe. I am not holding out for it based on what I saw when I tried just about EVERY miter saw on the market.

Here is what I can can say though about the saw itself, removing price from the argument.. It's the best saw I have EVER used, cased closed. I will NOT be returning it I don't care how much it stings to pay for it. When I initially decided to purchase it, I figured I would just "try" it for 30 days, so I threw it on a credit card, and tried to be as non-committal as I could..Well that was a mistake, because once you use it you will look at all the other saws differently-they're all basically crap by comparison. It has made everything I am doing right now make that much more sense; from the angle finder, to the lasers that truly work, to the soft start, to (and probably most important aspect) the way it bevels. I repeat, the way it bevels is simply incredible. Oh yeah, and I haven't even mentioned the dust collection.

Is the saw perfect? It's important to level set, cause some folks think they can spend their way into perfection. So the answer is, absolultey not..It blows more dust to the miter gauge than any saw I have used, and the static of the (poorly thought out) plastic miter dial causes the dust to stick to it. I am constantly blowing it off. But this is minor overall, and totally overshadowed by what it does so well. Is the saw worth the money? Generally speaking, most people (including me and I own it) would say HECK NO. But as I said, this is subjective for people...I would emphasize this point though, and don't let anyone tell you different. It's not a $1350 saw, it's easily a $2000 saw, unless you don't care about dust collection. And if you want a stand, consider it a $3000 saw. But yes, I bought it, stretched to get it, not returning it and couldn't be happier with it. But you have to do what works best for you..I will tell you, if you find a way to make it work, the saw will change alot of how you work and look at miter saws and execution of your work. It's the best miter saw made.

Skids,

What type of work do you do on your Kapex?

At the moment, lots of casings and crown...And it just incredibly good for this kind of work.  I am installing Windsor casing, with Plinths, and finished about 600 feet of crown with it. My miters have become perfect with crown, it made my copes better too. I have yet to throw anything super rough at it, but I will and I don't see why it wouldn't eat it up. It's a saw, it will cut anything, so anyone who wants to characterize this thing as a Doctors tool is dead wrong. It can do it all. I will be doing some exterior trim this summer as well, which this saw will be superb for.  I just find I respect this saw more, price may have something to do with that, I move slower, think more, enjoy it more and get better results.

I have a home-based workshop, and this thing is the centerpiece. I feel good about the fact it wont' be going from site to site in the back of a truck..In that respect it's the right saw for me, pricewise, not quite the right saw for me. But I am moving past it, I imagine once you use it you will see what I am referring to. It's a wonderful tool, and although I can't speak for the longevity of the tool, I feel good about the attentiveness to keeping people happy when something goes wrong. Festool is a great service company.
