hi.    just got a kapex 1 week ago, with the stand and left and right wings. only used it twice and iv noticed chips on the finish on the machine.  has any one had this problem, or have i just got a poorly finished tool.

Luke,

What do you mean by chips? I think mine has a couple of areas where the paint (I think it is just paint rather than powdercoating) has small bits missing, but I wouldn't really describe them as chips.

I think they're just where the part has been placed on a rack to dry the paint...

It's purely cosmetic though, and makes no difference to the aluminium underneath, but if you're concerned about it then call Festool UK on Monday or take it back to your dealer. If it is a genuine issue and you've only had it a week they should replace it.

its the paint and i don't think is affected the alloy. but i would say there is around ten chips/flaked off ,they vary in size for tinny to around 5-10mm. its a great machine but for the money you pay for the kapex i don't expect the paint to come off. also where you attach the wings in the 'v' grove each side its taken most the paint off. only put the on once. whats you thoughts.

thanks Luke

Luke,

It doesn't sound right that fitting the extensions once has taken all the paint off, but at the end of the day it's down to you - if you can live with it, fine. If you can't, take it back & get it swapped.

thanks for your advise guys,it appreciated.  i think Ill make a call Monday. i just think for the money the paint should last a bit longer than a week. but what a tool its great.

I'll trade yours for mine :)  I'm sure mine has more chips, but it's also been used since release in NA!

If you do take yours into the field, I would expect that it's gonna get more chips and knocks as mine has!

I took delivery of my first Kapex a few minutes after midnight when Eagle Tool was allowed to release it. My truck was second in line. That was quite the party night. Since then I have added 2 other Kapex. The face-frame specialist cabinet maker working for me uses his personal Kapex. None of these have any issues with the paint. None has required a trip back to Lebanon for service. We do routine maintenance ourselves. All of these Kapex are in frequent use  5 or 6 days a week.

i presume there is a catalist or heat that cures the paint . this step was skiped or something. definetly bring it back. i know you will chip it in time but 1 week is not aceptable.

Can you post a pic or two?

I have 2 Kapex's now, and have owned 3 of them and none have had chips.  My mobile unit get's used 5+ days a week and the shop one 1 or so days/week.  I don't have and have not had any chips on them.  They don't get treated with kid gloves and are used like I would any other tool or saw.  I do have some rub/wear marks but from sliding stock through them but none of the paint is gone.  Don't know why they were painted as most saws aren't.  It was said before that it may be to protect the Magnesium as it's softer than aluminum and would be more prone to damage.  Don't know for sure...

well, another proof they are "handmade" lol.
i can tell on my systainers aswell because the product stickers are slammed on all croocked...

hey guys spoke to festool about the paint and there replacing my kapex with a new one no questions asked . festool's service is great.  [big grin]

well, festool pricing is halfway between "how much?" and "you're kidding"........

you're paying for the engineering, and customer service,
and festool has folks here actually reading.... and paying
attention....

as for the base metal, it's an alloy, and more aluminum than magnesium,
i'm willing to bet, as the price of a kapex isn't $6,000.....
machining pure magnesium is flat hazardous, i've done it.
you set off a shaving, and light up a piece of magnesium the
size of a kapex base, and the only thing left of the machine
tool, will be a puddle of slag in the floor......

however, a pure magnesium frame would be lighter than
popcorn's flatulence....  [big grin]

I am looking to buy a Kapex. All of the demo units I have looked at, none of them show signs of  paint problem will they replace all units with this problem?

Welcome to the FOG!   [welcome]

Only someone at Festool can answer that question, but I can tell you that Festool's customer service here in the US is top tier and they strive to make their customers happy.

It appears from the thread that this seems to be an isolated incident and Festool UK replaced the unit under warranty.  I have worked my Kapex hard over the last 9 months transporting it daily and have not had a chip yet.

I wouldn't let this issue with one saw worry me if I was looking to purchase another one.

You have 30 days after your purchase to return or exchange any Festool power tool. That being said, this is not a common problem and there have only been two reports of the issue that I can think of.
