Kapex Ug stand Speed Test - 4 WOODGUY

I cant comment yet, my stand arrived today but they didnt text to say they were coming so they left a card & will deliver on Monday  [crying]

Dan, not what i want to hear  [scared]

Hey woodguy, a word of warning, you may want to take a file to the edge of the wings that attach to the kapex and the groove underneath as when i attached mine this afternoon it scratched all the side of the saw removing the paint! The cart is good but not as stable as i thought, certainly saves carrying the saw, the wings are ok but i cant see how you would set this up on uneven ground as the footprint of the cart is quite small, i regularly work on building sites often setting up my dewalt stand on uneven ground sometimes mud with no problems, the saw isnt or doesnt look/feel as rugged as my dewalt and i dont like the handle for moving the platter, i havent used the saw as its being exchanged, ah also when i tried to put the saw in travel mode it came out of its detent and hit the side of the cart taking a big chunk of paint off the frame. I am ranting a bit and will try the saw next week but for £1500 it has to impress off the bat!

Woodguy, these are my first impressions only so please dont take my word for it, you may be over the moon with yours.

So it did arrive with you, rumour has it the haggis has taken it away till monday [big grin] [big grin] [poke] [poke]

Yea, that's the annoying thing, it was at the workshop but no one here to sign for it  so its gone again [sad]

Those pesky Haggis  >:(

The entire thing together doesn't feel solid and wobbles a bit your are correct Dan but it does it as a complete unit so for working on its solid together as one.   If the arm was to wobble from the Kapex then that would be a problem but if you knock the arm it actually moves the kapex.

I think it will grow on you you do have to give it chance.  My first impressions of the UG where not very good I am trying to find my post I posted on Fog cnt remember which topic I put it in to see what my comment where at the time.

I posted like over 2000 posts lol!

Like I said over the phone to you I have grown to like the saw and the stand and have adapted to make it work for me and now when I use another trades mans saw I think I wouldnt buy this setup I dont like it at all.

The Kapex takes up alot less room in your van than any other setup out on the market.  The Dewalt its self takes up as much or more room than the Kapex Ugsetup and then you have the stand which you have to store some where in your van.

The paint chipping is something else though ill load the video up in 2 seconds of mine!

Jmb if you find that post that would be great, ill be surprised if i keep it to be honest, i tried to return it and the saw but somehow got talked out of it by the dealer! Not sure how that happened, the saw is so overhyped in fact its a bit of a let down kinda like the new starwars movies   [blink]

haahaa lol!

I never hyped the UG stand!!  I told you to go for the OF2200 first! Im hyping the OF2200 though! !  Der is NO way you wont like the OF2200 Ill eat my own poo if you didnt like the OF2200!  I can understand the Kapex Ugstand as it is alot of money and it aint perfect but I like it it works for me and its solid enough for the job  but first impressions its does not WOW you I agree.    I know if I had to buy a new saw I would get the Kapex Ug setup just cus  I love the less trips to the van and less space used in the van and I dnt like back pain lol!

Im sorry if I had any influence in your purchase and got you to buy something your not happy with.

Well I had a proper go with my stand and to be honest I am quite pleased. i understand the comments about the wings being a bit wobbly, but you can't have lightweight and sturdy, something has to give. I only cut plinth today and it was excellent, the built in rule is handy. I found it very easy to set up, I set it up on uneven ground and it was ok, better than I thought it would be. If you cut alot of heavy timber I think it would wobble more, but I don't do that very often. For cornice, pelmets, skirting etc I think it would be good. As also been said it travels well in the van and takes up not much space. I used a dewalt stand before, yes very sturdy but heavy and doesn't give support all the way like the Kapex stand.

Yes alot of money but isn't all Festool gear?? It certainly has been well thouht out. Also like how the wings can attach to my MFT and that its the same height as the stand. i don't regret the purchase. I think you need to test it thoroughly to appreciate it fully.
Hope this helps those who are in two minds.

Jmb, no mate i did a lot of research before buying the saw dont worry mate, mak, you are right i should test the saw appropriately before slating it, ive been in that sort of mood all day and taking on too much work its stressing me out.

Just a vid 4 Dan!  Showing the area where the extensions  attach to on the kapex to show what wear you get over time.

Also just me lifting the saw on and off the van with one hand!  Not many chop saws out on the market you can lift out with one hand and transport to the job all with one hand and set up and take down with one hand and foot lol! also lift it back with stand on to van with one hand.   So its good for people with one hand.

All this talk about this stand really makes me want to try one. I just did a little video with the stand I'm using now.  Hopefully I will be getting the ug stand soon and could compare them. I should have the video up within the next few days.

My Kapex and UG stand sit in my workshop 70% of the time and I cut 2 1/2" slabs of oak and sapele sometimes 4m long on it, without a problem.

BUT!!! I accept the stand is not as robust as my Dewalt stand was so I do not "slam dunk" the timber on it!

It is a question of reasonable level of expectation, the Kapex is the best mitre saw I have owned, the dust collection is second to none, the lasers are a real help, the mobility of the UG stand and ease of set up on site with the extensions, in my view, cannot be beaten.

Additionally since I have had the Kapex it has never been off the stand, I collapse it down, wheel it out the workshop, put in the van, go to site, take out of van, wheel the whole stand and saw to where I am cutting, inside the clients property without chipping paintwork or grunting like a moose in labour while juggling the saw, then at the end of the day just collapse it down and do the reverse run.

In short it will do everything I need of it and more.

Dan (never thought I would say this, but I agree with JMB), give it a couple of trial runs, you have the 30 day thing now to make your mind up.

When I first saw the UG stand and extensions at my local dealers I thought you are joking, no way am I paying that for a zimmer frame, but believe me it works.

OK.  Maybe, just maybe, you are pushing me closer to trying this out.  But I don't remember seeing dimensions for the outfit in the transport mode.  Would someone be so kind as to measure their setup when folded up and give me the dimensions as shown in the image below?  Transportation space is tight - I know you guys are laughing at me now - especially those on the other side of the pond who travel with 1/3 the space I do.

Thanks in advance.

Peter
