Kapex v-grove/UG extension hight issue.

Hi Shane,

I have a simple question and hopefully you can help. I attached my UG extensions this weekend for the first time since I bought them just over a month ago. Is there anyway that the height of the extensions can be slightly adjusted to the table of the Kapex? The left side is perfect but the right side is slightly higher than the top of the Kapex. I checked to make sure the v-grove was clean and measured everything possible only to discover that the v-grove on the right side of the Kapex is slightly higher than the left side. I swapped the UG extensions and with the left extension on the right side it of the kapex it was high but the right extension on the left of the Kapex was perfect.  I really don't want to start filing on my Kapex or the extensions, but I can't think of another solution. This has nothing to do with the adjustment that can be made with the leveling foot. I may be expecting too much but these tools aren't exactly cheap and I buy them for the quality and precision. Has this question been asked before or is this a first? I am not complaining, only looking for a solution. I love my Festool's and value this forum.

If you run a straight edge at least 4' long across the cutting table from left to right and centered at the blade, what do you get?

You should be able to use the leg adjustments of the extensions to make that whole thing coplanar.

Also, are your extensions really solidly connected to the Kapex? They should be like a solid connection, not loose at all. If not, there is a technique to make them totally solid.

Sorry for the delay in responding, impromptu trip out of town this weekend for a little getaway. Like Tom said, the extensions are made to seat in a way that no adjustment is necessary. I don't have the UG here, so I can't check it out and I don't know of an adjustment. If I don't hear back from you by morning, I'll check and get back to you.

Just a note, make sure there are no obstructions, like a wood chip, in the V-groove.

No need to apologize Shane, I did not expect an immediate response. You are always quick to respond and I really appreciate it.

I now have the right side 1/32" higher than the Kapex and the left side is 1/32" lower than Kapex. I will just call this good enough, this is only wood anyway  [laughing]  There are no obstructions in the v-groves and this small amount can not be taken out by adjusting the feet. I would prefer to have the right side the same as the left, but it's not that big of a deal. I was just wondering if there was a way to make height adjustments other than the leveling feet. I am a bit of a perfectionist and I sometimes let little things like this bother me  [embarassed]

What is this secrete technique Tom? The extensions seem to be solid.

It's not a secret, Daniel. It's just that if the extensions are not really secure in the v-grooves, they aren't properly connected. If yours are really solid, you likely have them seated and connected properly.

I'll try to remember to set mine up tomorrow and take some pix.

Just following up... There is not an adjustment point for the connection as I thought. Make sure the legs are fully extended and use the leveling foot to correct for any irregularities in the floor.

I had this same issue with mine -- I had to shim one side with some business card stock to get it perfectly flush and I used my RAS to sand some metal off the plate on the higher side to get it perfectly flush.  Now they seat perfectly with the top of the Kapex.  I had the same issue you described with my right side being ever so slightly higher and the left being slightly lower and this worked.  I would contact Festool service to discuss if you do not feel comfortable making this modification.  It was a little tedious doing it as you have to recalibrate every time as you make adjustments, but over a year later and they still work perfectly.

Hi Scot,

What you're describing is exactly my issue.  The left side is lower and right side is higher and both are off by the same amount. If I swap the extensions, right to left and left to right, I have the same issue, being that the left side is still low and the right side is still high. The problem is in the height of the v-groves on my Kapex. I'm not too excited about having to modify these expensive accessories, but I do not really want to modify the Kapex and void its warranty either. I will have to think about it more before I do anything that I may regret.

Yeah...but FWIW, you can always buy a replacement plate as a spare part if you mess it up, which is not too likely since you will be taking off such a small amount of metal. On the other side some business card stock will shim it flush and that is no permanent modification at all.  The wings are awesome and I like having the perfectly flush side to side so it was worth it.

Make sure the tabs are slide in all the way and the thumb screws are snug.
