I'm in the process of making this heart-shaped keepsake box for my SO's upcoming b-day (she doesn't read this blog so I'm safe to talk about the project here). What I wanted to know is how you would finish it. I'm thinking of keeping the striped texture that came out from the bandsaw cut from the bottom piece, now inverted so it is the top cover of the box. I'm thinking maybe a couple coats of reddish-type stain OR a natural finish and a top coat of beeswax. So that's the first thing I'd like your suggestion on if you were building this yourself. The 2nd part has to do with the way it will connect to the main box. I'm thinking just a simple dowel at the top and it will just swivel open and close. Any alternative suggestion to that? I didn't want to go the hinge route because it's meant to be very simple and I wanted to have an handcrafted feel (which I think it already does, especially if I instead go with just a natural finish). Finally, I'm concerned the top cover itself may be cupping a little over time. Any way to prevent this? You can kinda tell from the small gap in the side view.
