I built these boxes out of 3/4" and 5/8" melamine with 1/4" backs. I have a love/hate relationship with melamine. I like it's durability, I hate using it when I have to edge band it. My wife wanted me to use melamine because it would be easier to keep clean and wouldn't cost us a fortune, two of the materials main benefits.

The case is built using 5 and 6 mm dominos throughout, there are about a dozen pocket screws hidden in the base as well.

The idea behind this project is to give my daughter and her friends a comfortable place to hang out. If they are in my basement, at least I know (some of) what they are up to. We'll see if it ends up being a good idea.

I like it.  Nice and simple.  And with melamine u don't have to paint it!!

Thermal fused melamine is a wonderful material for something like this.  Get the edge banding without glue on it.   Use the double stick tape from Fastcap.   Only thing that is tricky are corners.  I band before assembly.  Then I use the Fastcap trimmer to get the edge down to about 1/16 to 1/32 of an inch.  Then run over it with the MFK 700 in horizontal  mode.   Phenomenal trimming job.   Also works on wood banding that is up to about 9/16"  wind.

Thanks for the advice, I'm definitely going to the tape method. Do you put the tape on the edge banding first?
