Laminate floor saw blade

Here's the guillotine in action. Unfortunately there were no bankers or royalty in the vicinity so I had to make do with laminate.

I'm cutting at the max thickness so it takes a bit of effort.Pretty basic tool and basic cut to go with it but it's fast and clean.Very astute people the French....

Guillotine

Thanks Nigel. I'm not sure...I'm pretty quick with a jigsaw now, having given up on lugging the Kapex around, but am tempted by the guillotine or the flooring saw.

You're welcome Richard.I'm just keen to avoid as much MDF dust as possible.....

Actually, like Festools, it was German ingenuity that invented the guillotine we all know.  :)

I can't find any German references to it but in any case it was the French who used it most effectively!

That's a good point. With Festool dust collection you can get spoilt (even tho' it's far from 100%.) I expect the dust collection on the flooring saw is zero.  [wink [unsure [embarassed]
When you do laminate floors do you charge by the hour or by the square meter ?

Richard

Sorry for the delay Richard,This went under the radar. How does that happen?

To answer your question I make an estimate on the time it will take and price accordingly.

Cordialement,

Nigel.

I fit a lot of laminate flooring,i usually use a magnum shear,it`s a similar idea to the guillotine, but uses a sharp blade which will cut through 20mm oak,i use my carvex for cutting down the length(although i occassionally use an exact saw, which is a bit like a mini ts55),i only ever use my ts55 on laminate when i doing stairs.I didn`t realise they did a laminate blade, will give it a try next time

[welcome] Floorman,

That magnum shear certainly looks the business, much better than my crummy guillotine but at a price no doubt!

The Magnum Shear™ - Music Version

When i first saw the magnum shear, they were £750 for the 13inch,which was too much money to risk on somthing i couldn`t guarantee would work, but then they dropped to £550,so i got one. It`s one of the best tools i`ve ever bought(and i do have a lot lol),it will cut 20mm thick solid oak,but only up to around 150mm wide and you do need to keep up with new blades at £60 a time,so i don`t really use it for that,it`s best for engineered wood(even 190mm wide x 20mm thick with a 6mm oak top layer) and laminate, for that kind of use the blades last for ages. The only annoying thing for me is,the price has now dropped to £300 for one [mad]

Floor man, for £300 i'm interested, but after a quick search haven't had much luck in sourcing one in the UK. Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Richard

sorry floor man i forgot to welcome you.

do you think it is actually worth that kind of money. afterall you still need to bring a jigsaw etc with you for the rip cuts

Flooring is not my everyday job.  But, I think that TS saws are best suited for other work.

I use a portable tablesaw with an inexpesive thin-kerf combo blade for rips.  But for crosscuts and profiles, a jigsaw works for me.  I recently started using Bosch laminate flooring T-shank jigsaw blades and they work great and last a long time.  The symetrical pointed teeth stick out straight from the blade and cut clean on both sides of the work.  I don't believe that Festool has an equivalent blade.

They come in 14 TPI and 20 TPI.  The 14 TPI is the most useful for me.  The 20 TPI is a scroll-type blade with a narrow shank.

Thanks for the welcomes [smile]

Personally,i find it well worth the money, the majority of the cuts in a room are end ones,so being able to just put a little pencil mark and make a perfectly straight, clean cut in about 2 seconds, makes it a real time saver,i did the whole downstairs of a house the begining of last week in engineered oak and the debris of all those cuts could probably only fill a tablespoon,i`ve been using it for about 3 years and i suppose like most tools, you just get into the routine of using them and it naturally becomes quicker for you,i still have a guilotine like the one Nigel has, which i used to use before i got the magnum and if you are mainly fitting laminate, then these are great and i would definately recommend one
