LED Task Lamp for MFT? Any good options?

I'm looking for a large LED (halogen are too hot) task lamp to mount on my MFT/3.

Besides getting a cheapie task lamp and adding an LED bulb, have you seen any good/hefty LED task lamps that would work? The ones on amazon etc also seem dinky and used for a work desk. I'd use as a raking light and general use to see markings easier.

thought about the syslite kal2? you can leave it plugged in for stationary use and take it to go. it spits out 770 lumens which is more than the previous.

I use Milwaukee's 18V LED floodlight which has 1100 lumens.  I just finished making adapters that allow me to mount it on my laser tripod.

They also sell a bushing that will mount it in one of your MFT holes.

Back in my turning days this is the light I used on my lathe.  They are terrific, movable in any direction stays where you put it and also has an easy to attach base.  The little base can be screwed to just about anything then the light just snaps to it.  They are available from Craft Supplies in Utah. Just look for Stay-Put work lamp on their site.

The Stay-Put is still available at Craft Supplies as well as Amazon, but be aware that it's a halogen lamp., not an LED.

Lee Valley has a lamp bushing made for 20mm holes, it is meant to be used with any lamp with a 1/2" post.

Yes, the Stay-Put light is not an LED persay, but it is a screw in bulb so you could put any type light you want in it.

I personally think this is too big for MFT use, but you did ask for big and heavy... [blink]

And my tool addiction continues...I picked up this over the weekend.

Boy this thing is bright (supposedly 1800 lumens on high, 1100 lumens on low). It's built more in the vein of a worklight, similar to the Snap-On light that I own. It's definitely bulkier than the Syslite but more rugged, like most of Metabo's designs. The tripod mount on the bottom for mounting is 5/8" versus the 1/4" for the Syslite, if that gives you an idea of the targeted market.

CRI seems very high too, compared to any other LED light I've seen (supposedly Porsche uses these for their final paint inspection). PWM on low seems nonexistent, if anyone is hyper-sensitive to flickering like me.

I put a track light bar over my 2 MFTs and installed 4 60W LED floods in 4 cans.

The LEDs augment fluorescent lights that I've had up there for years. I'm thinking of taking down the old fluorescent bulbs and adding a second track with another 4-6 LED floods.

I prefer the LED lighting far better than the fluorescent lighting.

Be advised, where I buy LED bulbs, there are 2 degrees of "whiteness". The brightest and whitest LEDs are far too harsh for my eyes. The softer and less bright LEDs are much easier on the eyes.

The LEDs are expensive, but are cool enough to touch (less expensive to run and don't heat the area) and they are supposed to last a very long time.

I buy a brand call "CREE".

The perceived harshness is usually more a CRI issue rather than strictly color. i.e. you can have a softer white 5000K LED and have worse CRI than a 6000K LED.

High CRI LEDs are harder to come across, and usually lower output, but they're out there, oh and way more expensive.

If you get a photo light stand, and a ball head adapter with a 1/4" tripod mount on top, you can mount your syslite on it.  You will be able to move it anywhere you need it and, depending on the light stand, you should be able to have it anywhere from a few feet off the ground to 7 feet or more high.  Many years ago I did something similar with a plain light bulb and it has been one of my most useful gadgets around the shop.

I use that light on my workbench and like it a lot.

I use them with the 20mm adapter available on the LV page for the MFT and they work really well.  I do use rechargeable batteries in them as a set lasts about 2 hours before needing recharging (3 AA's per use).
