Let's talk about a great site/"beater" plane - Rali 220 Evolution

I have a Gerber folding knife that takes replaceable utility knife blades.  The blade is held in place very securely with a small screw.  So replacing the blade means getting out a screw driver and unscrewing a tiny screw, replacing the blade and the tiny screw.

For less time than that takes, I generally put a couple of drops of honing oil on my Arkansas stone and give it a few quick swipes.  (A fringe benefit is that it ends up being quite a bit sharper than the factory edge. But it kind of defeats the purpose of having a knife with a disposable blade.)

So how sharp are these disposable blades?  Are they thick enough to avoid flexing?

I did try the titanium coated blades, but the sharp tip is the area that I mostly use and that did not seem to be assisted at all by the titanium.  It is long gone now, a victim of the Arkansas stone.

Speaking of the regular utility knife blades, I mostly use the Stanley carbide blades. They are by far not as sharp as I keep my true pocket knife, but they last. And then I buy these 50/100 blades dispenser, I think the one I'm on right now is a Snap-On branded one, as true disposable blades for all the dirty/gooey/tar stuff. Some get tossed after a single cut - I don't care about these and buy them whenever theres promotional pricing.

The regular Rali blades are definitely sharp. No "turds".

Incidentally, the sys-hwz systainer hand tool insert has a space for a Rali plane… in case anyone buys one after reading this thread and wants a very expensive way to carry it.  [wink]

I like Rali planes EXCEPT when it comes time for new blades.

Can't seem to get them in the USA anymore.
