We've sold our house in Sydney and we're in the middle of buying an acreage north of Noosa (Cootharaba) .. for those unfamiliar with Oz we've left the big smoke and headed ~1200km closer to the sunshine.

I'll finally have a site to build a BIG workshop and a home site that will have views to the ocean in the east and the moutain ranges to the west .. multiple damns and lots and lots of space.

We're going to be living simple for about 3 months in a rental close to our new home and in that time we'll be able to start planning and organizing our new lives. The goal is to get off the grid as much as possible for energy and food.

I'll use this thread to post updates as we progress for anyone that finds stepping out of the rat race interesting.

Please share any life change adventures - I hate making mistakes that I could have avoided by learning from others.

BTW, Done it myself more than once, we left London more than 10 years ago and I sure don't miss the conjestion & rail strikes, it certainly is a life of surprises.

It gives me a little shot of perspective to hear about this. Makes the constant hustle, bustle  and struggle, (2 young kids and my own business), worth it to know that the light at the end of the tunnel can be a simplified and enjoyable later life.

The property we've bought has a very liveable little house. Workshop, greenhouses and solar arrays deffo come early.

I'm anxious to see the new shop build. As you know, we moved into a much bigger home with a 3 car garage a few months ago. The extra space is so nice. I'm still planning to try and build a home and my dream shop in the next 5 years or so.

The is about 1km from the place we're buying ... this view is from the rear of the rental property where we'll be staying for ~10 weeks. These views are 360 degree.

Most of our stuff is on it's way here tomorrow, but sadly 80 cubic meters turned out to be about 20 short of what we needed. The rest is coming in two weeks, sadly some of my favorite stuff is in the delayed load.

The cars and the pooch are here and I'm looking at gardening toys .. likely to go with a Cub Cadet Tank and a Polaris Ranger.

I've started discussion with a potential builder for the workshop ... looking at a hanger style 10x15m workshop with high ceilings and a 3x15m screened outdoor work area. I need to spend more time walking the property to choose the final site and refine the design.

Nice picture.  For those of us north of the equator, the picture is quite properly upside down.  I'm sure for those south of the equator it is right side up .

Have you considered local timber and sawmills?  Looks like there are some trees in the neighborhood.  Also, I love the idea of a screened in porch.  My shop is in a walkout basement with a 5x4m porch out the back, and it's very nice to work outside when the temps are not extreme.

Local timber is part of the attraction [big grin]

There's a lot of pine forestry in the area, but there's a lot of small mills and timber salvage too with heaps of interesting stuff .. and I haven't ventured far yet !!

For me the the outside deck is to enjoy the cooler evenings, the climate here is pretty much tropical - so I'll be air conditioning and seriously insulating the workshop.

I may inherit a shipping container that I could convert into a drying room for timber (need to look into that).
