lining up the domino in the middle of a field

I was building some speaker stands and was having trouble getting the dominos to line up between the bottom horizontal piece and the vertical box.

What I found was I was using the fence, as is recommended, for the vertical piece and the bottom of the domino for the flat piece:

Of course, you can't use two different reference surfaces as the domino won't line up.  However, there isn't a marking on the domino when using it in a vertical configuration to be able to reference off the fence.  I suppose I could use the bottom of the domino for both but I was always told not to do that.  How do you end up with something like this?

Half Inch Shy has a video on YouTube which should help. It demos 3 techniques but addresses mid-panel joinery. I did something similar and was able to get the correct alignment after watching the video. Also, I found that, once you have the exact alignment on the horizontal piece with the corner of the Domino fence, marking that corner with a pencil and even with masking tape helps with making sure the tool stays in place when you start it up since it tends to move slightly. Watch the video. Part of it addresses using Dominos for shelves, but the overall alignment questions were addressed for me. It helped me.

That's what I thought... using the bottom of the domino to line things up.

Agree the Halfinchshy video nails the technique for the 500. It's a tad more complicated for the 700.
