Looking for a mitre gauge?

I just watched it an hour or so ago. I was surprised by the Kreg though? maybe a bad batch? or QC is slipping? I had one of them before the fire/loss and it was great. Dead-on 90 degrees and the vernier worked well for some odd angles a few times. The pin thing was always a concern, but I never had a problem with it.

Yes, a good overview. I hate that he keeps square the miter fence to the blade. That's simply not right, even if he gets away with it.

Stumpy Nubs just did a rebuttal video about the Harvey mitergage.

Which may have been skewed by the fact that Harvey sponsors him…
Oh, how I wish that we could go back to the times when a carpenter uncle could tell you what to buy and use…

i agree. that stumpy video stinks. he barely disclosed that they are a sponsor

If by "barely disclosed", you mean "mentioned numerous times within the first 4 minutes of the video that they are a sponsor and put in the very first line of the video description that they are a sponsor" then yes, it was barely disclosed...?

I don't have a dog in this fight either way, but things like this (two high-viewership vloggers disagreeing on a product) are ways that the internet can sow more angst and discord among people than it can ever do in bringing them together.

It looked to me like Marc TWW simply got a bad version of the Harvey, and not being sponsored, didn't have a contact at Harvey who could actually help him and not just send basic troubleshooting information. The tech support rep probably didn't know who he was dealing with and didn't escalate the request or offer to send a replacement.

On the other hand, Stumpy is sponsored and probably knows how to jump the line and get higher level support in the event of a problem. When he ordered his third Harvey, someone probably made sure they sent one without the gap.

Also, I've read somewhere that these two have somewhat of a beef going with each other. I don't know why or what about (or even if it's true) but whatever.

The Harvey sure is pretty, but, I'm happy with my Incra.

Snip.but, I'm happy with my Incra.

When I decided to upgrade my SawStop miter gauge (not really as bad as some SawStop users put it), I looked at only two offers: Incra and JessEm.

Reviews of Incra's and JessEm's older model were both reassuring. I eventually picked the new model by JessEm, because I've been very impressed with its table saw's stock guides.

If budget had been a factor, I'd have got the Incra 1000SE.

nah he absolutely did not.

no words like 'full disclosure' , no text on screen. vague phrasing like 'harveys is one of our family of brands i hand picked' and that's at almost 2min mark. what does that even mean. he hand picked a brand what

'A bad tool review sends me on a journey to find out the truth about this tool and my sponsor.' - non explicit

whole thing stinks and every bad design of the tool he brushed off as 'personal preference'

edit: i dont have a beef against anyone except when they falsely represent themselves. in this case stumpy and youtube in general comes off as some generic woodworker he could be on harveys payroll or something, that should be disclosed or any other relationships he may be having when he presents his 'findings'

I watched both of these, I quite like both Stumpy and Marc and I’d say I trust both.

My read is that they both described what they experienced fairly and honestly, and that Marc’s unit was poorly assembled, manufactured or calibrated. It was noticeably different to Stumpy’s.

Just bad luck I guess.

I have been thinking of a new miter gauge so this is relevant.

My take on the Harvey is if TWW called them up and they blew him off so to speak, what kind of support will I get if I were to buy one.

The Jessem looks pretty nice.

I rate the quality of Jessem products very highly.

Having said that I have the Incra 1000SE mitre gauge and it’s been excellent.

I agree that both are truthfully showing what they experienced. However, Stumpy's defense of the pointer setup in the Harvey still falls short to me:

Agreed @smorgasbord I use my shop built crosscut sled most of the time.

But I do break out the Incra when I’m doing tenons etc. the stops and micro adjustment are better for that, plus angles obviously.

Amen...I'd be just another complainer as far as they're concerned.

I've had the Incra 1000 HD as well as the Incra 5000 sled and now the new Jessem and while I liked the Incras I love the Jessem.

I've had the Harvey for the past year.  Replaced an Incra as I did not like having to use an Allen for all the adjustments.

My Harvey has zero slop and a measure of .014 distance between the cursor and scale.  I think Marc got a bad unit. Harvey should have offered an exchange to him.  I did watch Stumpy Nubs video.  That prompted me to check out mine

Sorry if I'm being ignorant - but what does this mean?

A cut made with a miter gauge will still cut at 90°, even if the blade is not parallel to the miter slot. As long as your material tracks straight, you'll just end up with a wider kerf.

Typically you'd adjust the gauge to the slot, not the blade, as it's the reference your gauge tracks in. Most adjust their blade to the slot, allowing for the blade to be used to square your gauge.

This is exaggerated but maybe gives you a better visual of what happens.
