I'm a cabinetmaker with over a decade of professional experience. I am planning to start a website/blog focusing on the business aspects of woodworking. Right now I'm researching and learning what people actually want.

As all of you know, woodworking is a tough business to survive in, much less flourish. There are a ton of great resources out there on the woodworking part of woodworking (books, blogs, youtube channels), but not so much about the business end. I would like to remedy that.

I imagine writing about topics such as:
-Turning a hobby into a job
-Breaking into the woodworking field
-Pricing your work
-Going out on your own after working for someone else
-Marketing and Selling
-Contracts
-Finding clients with the $$ to actually buy what you build
-Interviews with successful pro woodworkers
-Interviews with architects/designers/etc - how does the business work from their point of view?

Give me benefit of the doubt, and assume that I would be providing good, useful information.

My questions are:
-Does this sound like something you would be interested in reading?
-Are there specific topics you'd like to see discussed?

Any feedback would be very helpful. Thanks!

Also, I don't want to spam up these forums with too much self-promotion, but if you PM me your email I'll let you know when the site launches.

look forward to your work, myself like some ppl of my generation dont read much these days. We enjoy quick access to yt videos, instagram and etsy to get your work out to the world with the power of the #hashtags.

I'm interested. And I like to read long form, coherent text, not 140 character blips.

It would be interesting for me as well. Have you listened to the podcast Making It? They do talk a bit about the transition to self-employment in the Maker-field in general and David Picciuto @ Drunken Woodworker speaks out of his recent transition from web designer to woodworker/artist.

I think it is a good idea, there is not much out there on this subject and most of what is out there is just standard business jargon and not geared toward cabinet making/ woodworking.

One thing i would include along the way is how to navigate the ups and downs of being in business and how to deal with the problems when the arise ( because they will).

Good luck

Thanks for the comments, everybody.

@Reiska - No, I haven't heard of either of those. I'll check them out.

I'll let you guys know when I get things up and running.

I guess I'm from the generation that still has one foot firmly in print as well as one in digital.  I read blogs occasionally, but the content on a lot of blogs seems to be added to fill space or provide an update for the sake of providing an update.  I have been getting the free subscription to Cabinetmaker FDM for most of the last decade.  I like the mix of news, info about new products (mostly press releases and advertising), and the profiles of other woodworking businesses.  And I love the Dr. Gene column.  I also like that it's printed on paper, so if I read it while I'm eating breakfast, I don't have to worry about milk splashing on it.

I wish that there would have been that type of help when I started out, of course there were no computers or web back in the 70's. I just jumped in both feet. Lossed time & money learning. I think it would be a great Idea. Good Luck
