Hello,
First post from a new member. I am fairly new to Festool and am looking at the Kapex 120 REB. I was planning on buying new but found a used one and would like to get opinions on the asking price.

It includes the Kapex 120 REB, UG stand with side extensions, and crown stops. It was bought Nov 2022 from Amazon, but doesn't include any manuals or boxes (I asked about a box for the Kapex in case it ever needs to be sent in for repair). Initial asking price is $2200 but they said they would let it go for $2000. From what I was able to find, that seems on the very high side, but I may be wrong.
Thoughts?

Thank you,
Paul

That price seems more than reasonable to me. That's a $2700 package and if Festool Recon offered it for sale, they'd maybe discount it to $2200 and only give you a 1 year warranty. Pimp them for a few more bucks if that makes you happy...you've nothing to lose...the worse they will say is no.  [big grin]

You should be able to get the full 3 year transferable warranty with the current offering.

As far as the box goes, that's likely not necessary because of the upgrades Festool has applied to the current Kapex.

Thank you for your reply. I wouldn't get the full 3 years though. If it's transferable, I would already be 1 yr 3 months into the initial 3 years from the original purchaser.

Ya but still better than Festool Recon...and cheaper.  [big grin]

Festool had an earlier revision that had motor problems and that was giving them bad press.  The motors burned up.  This is the improved revision so does not have that problem.  However, when they introduced the new version they had such negative press that they had to offer the new saw with a good deal. I think the revised version came out in 2020? and they offered as a limited time special the cart, both wings, and the new saw version for $1995.  At that price it allowed them to get some out in the field to repair some of the bad press the previous model generated. Normal price was about $2795.  This would not include the crown stops. It looks like your saw was manufactured after that deal ended (Maybe deal lasted till Aug 2020?) so he probably did not buy at the special $1995 deal; and that deal ended long ago.  Also I think there was a 10% price increase after this deal.

Don't be too worried about the box,  The saw's weight is not well balanced in the box.  My box had numerous fist size holes in it but nothing was missing because the saw moved around inside the box.  I was very disappointed that the saw was not better secured in the box.  Just make sure you buy the current revised model and not the older one that had motor problems. If you look at the model plate it will designate the year and month the tool was manufactured

its an ok deal.  I've seen few here in classifieds for less but not as new as this one

If I were interested in a used Kapex, I check it out thoroughly. I'd check the squareness of a cut using each side of the fence in turn. Some saws cut square using one fence side but not on the other side. I'd do a cut through some thick material to see if the saw bogs down. I'd look for grease coming out of the motor. I'd listen to the motor as the saw makes a cut.

Sounds good to me...yet you didn't say how you are going to set up the saw. Are you planning to use it with the UG stand or on a miter saw station setup, which would render the UG stand surplus,  unless you can resell it for a desirable amount.

As Birdhunter advised, a thorough check (bed, fence, lasers, angles, etc.) with sample cuts  is essential to ensure that you aren't going home with an expensive lemon. You probably won't know for sure why the owner is selling their saw. Some people complained about the Kapex on this Forum, and if you like, you can do a search to see the kinds of issues they had with their Kapex.

Is the burned EB motor story a myth or not, only Festool could tell (I've never known anyone who had a motor issue, including one of the largest dealers here -- at least none during warranty. Whatever happens after the warranty is unknown to them). Since the one on sale is REB, you have one less worry -- real or perceived.
