Hello friends:

I am an African who  love woodworks. But I never had the opportunity in my country to learn when I was a young boy. As an adult with high academic background, I still have not overgrown that love of cabinentry.
I am looking for someone to teach me this craft. Is there any one out there willing to help this African who would like to go back with this skill to go and help his community youths? I live in Baltimore, Maryland.

Thanks for any help

Well, if you are ever in the SW Michigan area I can show you what little I know.  Thats geography for you though.  What do you think you want to start with?  Carcasses?  Doors?  I would start with carcasses/boxes.  It is for the most part the easiest part of the cabinet to set yourself for.

What equipment do you have?  Being an African, do you prefer faceframe or euro cabinetry?

Your local woodworking retailers would be a good source of referral.  Most will know about or sponsor clubs, classes, etc for real hands on type learning.

I am grateful to all those who have given kind advice and some who have offered to help if I am in their geographic region.

Please offer more. If any one is willing to teach me, I would prefer someone in the Maryland area. In the alternative if anyone is willing to travel to Africa to teach while making money.

Thanks

Spend $50 and buy marc sommerfeld's series of dvds on cabinet making and it will help you with the basics.  Most cabinet makers start with a design on paper or in cad and then build the face frames for the cabinet if they are building face frame type cabinets.  After building the face frames the boxes and the doors and drawers are built to fit the face frames...or some shops buy their doors and drawers and just build the boxes.

Best,
Todd
