I found that a good place for my telephone during work was problematic until I started wearing cycling jerseys.
Any place in your pants or around your waist is a problem because you have to bend and squat a lot during work. The phone can get crushed, drop out of the pocket or get scratched. But my problem was over when I went out for a quick job for someone on the bicycle wearing a jersey, and realised this works great, the phone is safe and out of the way because it is in a deep back pocket on my right, and moves with the upper body and not the lower body.
Cycling jerseys tend to have three deep pockets on the back. My phone is always in the right one, and I have two more deep pockets for tools. Make sure the pockets are deep, because if they're shallow the phone can still drop out when you bend.
Most expensive cycling jerseys are very tight and meant for competitive cyclers, but you can also buy more losely fitting ones for recreational use.
