I have a bunch of door jambs on a historic house that I would prefer not to pull and reattach. I am thinking that a shoulder plane might be best to "unstick them". It seems that a lot of them haven't been able to be fully shut for many years and have a lot of paint and other debris stopping the action.

I have wanted a shoulder plane for a while to clean dadoes and rabbets. A) does this seem like a good application? And B) what brand, blade type and why?  Lastly, C) would a bullnose plane be a good choice as well.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers. Bryan.

I wouldn't get a bullnose plane unless you actually need to plane into a corner or edge.

I have a LN large shoulder plane and a LV medium shoulder plane with PMV-11 blade.  Both have excellent fit and finish and nice adjustments.  I like the LV medium plane ergonomics - the handle in the back is very nice.

If you are doing doors with paint, I'd get a LV because of the blade.

I agree with Harvey and will add that you can use shoulder planes with adjustable mouths to get right into corners by removing the toe.

I have the LV medium shoulder plane with the A2 blade.  It is beautifully machined and the adjustable rear handle makes handling an absolute pleasure.  I haven't used it that much due to its specialized uses however it has worked exceptionally well whenever I did use it.  I don't think the powdered metal blade was available when I bought mine, but that is a great option.
